Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF125X225S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF125X225S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø125mm bore, 225mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the front cover — it holds the load at the extended (rod-out) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF125X225S

The AirTAC SAILF125X225-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a mechanical lock in the front cover, featuring a standard carbon steel rod and a magnetic piston for position sensing. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air automatically drives the lock pin into the rod to secure the load at the fully extended stroke end without requiring live pressure. In this 125mm bore configuration, the cylinder generates 6136N of thrust at 0.5MPa, making it well-suited for heavy vertical lifting and holding tasks.

This model includes a PT tapered port thread and operates at speeds between 30-500mm/s. Unlike a plain SAI cylinder, the SAIL series provides true static load-holding capability upon power loss. For mid-stroke clamping requirements, the BSAI clamp-lock variant should be used instead, as this front-lock unit strictly secures the rod only at the extended terminal. Additionally, the variable air cushion at the locker end is notably shorter than at the free end to accommodate the locking mechanism.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the extended (rod-out) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the front-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Is the Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF125X225S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 125mm bore cylinder when an application demands robust extended-position holding, as it provides 6136N of push force at 0.5MPa. If your system requires less force, stepping down to a 100mm bore yields 3927N at the same pressure, while upgrading to a 160mm bore offers 10053N for heavier loads. Choose this SAILF configuration specifically when the load must be secured at the rod-out stroke end; if retracted holding is needed, the SAILB version is the correct alternative. For locking at arbitrary mid-stroke positions, select the BSAI instead.

When integrating this cylinder, remember that the lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: never use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock—always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Furthermore, if human safety depends on the load remaining elevated, an independent mechanical safety measure must supplement the cylinder. To replace this unit, match the 125mm bore, 225mm stroke, front locker position, PT port thread, and the -S magnet specification for CMSE and DMSE sensors. At 225mm of stroke, ensure external guides are used to manage side loads effectively.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the extended (rod-out) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)

Airtac SAILF Front Locking Pneumatic Cylinder SAILF125X225S FAQ

The 125mm bore generates a push force of 6136N at 0.5MPa and 8590N at 0.7MPa. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the extended stroke end in the front cover. It provides a static hold, not a dynamic brake, and can be unlocked automatically via air supply or manually via the release lever.
