AirTAC BSE Series Rod-Lock ISO Cylinders

The AirTAC BSE series integrates a spring-applied, air-released rod-lock unit onto an ISO 15552 cylinder (32-125mm bore) to hold vertical and suspended loads safely on air loss or E-stop.

Series Overview

The BSE series is a rod-lock air cylinder built on the AirTAC SE standard ISO 15552 body. It spans 7 bores from 32 to 125mm. The push force at 0.5 MPa ranges from about 402 N to about 6136 N, matching the SE standard cylinder class.

A spring applies a clamping collet directly to the piston rod. Supplying air to a separate G1/8 release port frees the rod. The lock is spring-applied and air-released, making it fail-safe: if air is lost, exhausted, or an E-stop trips, the collet clamps and holds the rod in both directions at whatever position it stopped.

This provides real drift protection for vertical or suspended loads, unlike a plain SE cylinder. The cylinder runs on 0.15-0.7 MPa, and the separate release port unlocks with 0.15-0.7 MPa. The BSE is not a dynamic brake. Engage the lock only after the rod stops, and release it only when pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. Allow at least about 0.5 s for full release before moving.

Typical Applications

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Gates

Prevents suspended loads from crashing down when air pressure drops or an E-stop is hit, holding the rod safely in both directions.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stops

Locks a stopper blade in position to hold pallets on a conveyor, ensuring no drift occurs during heavy loading or air exhaustion.

precision_manufacturing

Z-Axis Machine Stops

Holds a vertical machining axis rigidly in place during power loss, using the clamping collet to prevent gravity-induced descent.

How to Choose the Right Model

Choose the BSE for fail-safe rod holding on vertical or suspended ISO 15552 axes. Match the bore to your load: the 32-125mm range yields a push force at 0.5 MPa from about 402 N to about 6136 N. For a double-rod rod-lock configuration, step out to the BSED family. For a plain ISO 15552 axis without a lock, use the SE.

Confirm these 5 points before ordering: 1) Bore size (32-125mm), 2) Stroke length, 3) Release port thread (G1/8) and cylinder operating pressure (0.15-0.7 MPa), 4) ISO 15552 mounting interface and SE accessories (excluding FTC), 5) Magnet option for CMSE/DMSE sensors.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Required force at your working pressure
  • ✓ Stroke and available mounting space
  • ✓ Port / thread type (PT / NPT / G)
  • ✓ Sensor / magnet option (-S)?
  • ✓ Side load — consider a guided model

Frequently Asked Questions

The BSE series spans 7 bores from 32 to 125mm. The push force at 0.5 MPa ranges from about 402 N for the 32mm bore to about 6136 N for the 125mm bore. The bidirectional static holding force per bore is charted in the model figures.

It is spring-applied and air-released for fail-safe operation. If air is lost, a clamping collet holds the rod in both directions. It is not a dynamic brake: engage the lock only after the rod stops, balance pressures on both sides of the piston, and allow at least about 0.5 s for full release before moving.

The cylinder operates on 0.15-0.7 MPa. The separate release port (G1/8) unlocks with 0.15-0.7 MPa. It uses an ISO 15552 mounting interface (SE body); SE accessories fit BSE except FTC, and CMSE/DMSE sensors fit magnetic BSE models.

Choose BSE for fail-safe rod holding on vertical or suspended ISO 15552 axes. Use BSED if you need a double-rod rod-lock configuration. If you need a standard ISO 15552 cylinder without a mechanical lock, choose the SE series.
