The LGC is AirTAC's crossed roller guide: precision cylindrical rollers held in a cage in alternating orientation between hardened V-raceways. Because rollers make line contact instead of the point contact of a ball guide, stiffness and load capacity are far higher for the same envelope. The trade-off is defining: the rollers do not recirculate, so travel is limited by rail length, and when the slide moves, the cage moves with it by about half the travel. Rail length must be selected from the manufacturer's maximum-stroke table with the working stroke set slightly shorter.
The range covers five sizes - LGC1 (1.5 mm rollers), LGC2 (2.0 mm), LGC3 (3.0 mm), LGC4 (4.0 mm) and LGC6 (6.0 mm), no LGC5 - with per-roller dynamic ratings from 125 N (LGC1) to 3175 N (LGC6). These ratings are per roller, not per guide: total capacity scales with the number of rollers in the cage, which is why the roller count is a position in the ordering code. Rails are stainless steel, cut to length 20-600 mm; type A is a three-row arrangement, type B a four-row one; accuracy grades are H (high) and P (precision). One counterintuitive fact for buyers coming from recirculating ball guides: on LGC the static rating is slightly BELOW the dynamic one (LGC1: 120 N static against 125 N dynamic; LGC6: 2550 against 3175), the reverse of a ball guide. PCB drilling machine slide sections
Drilling spindle slides on circuit-board machines need short, exactly guided travel under repeated load. A type B four-row LGC set, adjusted in place with a dial indicator, gives the line-contact rigidity a ball guide of the same size cannot match.
Optical benches and optical test instruments
Aligning optics demands micrometre-class repeatability over limited travel. LGC's non-recirculating cage keeps rolling-element spacing constant, so the stage runs without the ball-carryover variation of a recirculating guide.
X-ray equipment slide sections
The manufacturer's stated application: the slide sections of X-ray machines. Select the rail from the maximum-stroke table and leave extra stroke margin on vertical axes, where gravity makes cage drift accumulate in one direction.
Metrology fixtures and jig adjustments
A short-stroke LGC1 or LGC2 set makes a compact fine-position slide for measuring and setting fixtures, where the cheap cage spare ($13-$181) makes drift or damage an inexpensive repair rather than a scrapped assembly.
How to Choose the Right Model
Start by confirming a crossed roller guide is what the job needs: short, precise, high-rigidity travel where a recirculating ball guide is not stiff enough. Pick the size by roller diameter and cage roller count together - a small size with a long cage and a large size with a short one are different propositions, since capacity scales with both. Type B (four-row) is the higher-capacity, more symmetric arrangement and is the type we stock most (130 sets against 104 type A). Choose rail length from the maximum-stroke table and set the working stroke slightly shorter, because the cage walks along the rail. Grade H is what we stock; grade P is available to order. Decide the clearance-adjustment method up front - adjusting screws, pressure plate, or taper block, in rising order of rigidity - because it affects the surrounding machining.
Before ordering, confirm five points: (1) size code and roller diameter, (2) cage type A or B and roller count, (3) rail length and working stroke against the maximum-stroke table, (4) accuracy grade (H from stock, P to order), (5) whether you need a complete set or only a cage spare - a code like LGC2R28 with no type letter and no length is a cage assembly, not a rail. Step out of the series if your travel exceeds roughly half a metre or you want a sealed, bolt-on recirculating assembly with published per-carriage ratings: that is AirTAC's LSH. For small, light-duty positioning in a tight envelope, look at the LRM miniature guide instead.

The catalogue ratings are PER ROLLER: dynamic C1 is 125 N for LGC1, 292 N for LGC2, 640 N for LGC3, 1230 N for LGC4 and 3175 N for LGC6; static C0 is 120, 290, 610, 1170 and 2550 N respectively. Total capacity depends on how many rollers the cage carries (stocked counts run 6 to 45), so a complete guide's rating is higher than the per-roller figure but is not a simple multiplication. Because the rollers do not recirculate, the cage travels with the slide by about half the stroke - so usable stroke is always less than rail length. Stocked rail lengths run 20 mm to 600 mm across 37 lengths; the exact maximum stroke per rail length is in the manufacturer's maximum-stroke table, and your working stroke should be set slightly shorter. If the cage drifts, running several full strokes brings it back near centre.
Every stocked complete set is grade H; grade P is a catalogue option available to order. Because final accuracy on a crossed roller guide is set largely by the fitted adjustment - dial-indicator alignment, clearance setting via adjusting screws, pressure plate or taper block - a carefully installed H-grade set often outperforms a hastily fitted P-grade one. Never mix rails from different sets; accuracy is controlled as a matched set and cannot be guaranteed otherwise.
