Functionally it is a 3/2, direct-acting, single-solenoid valve with spring return - energise to feed the outlet, de-energise and the spring vents the line. It is a natural driver for miniature spring-return cylinders, jets, clamps and pilot lines.
The AC24V coil consumes 5.0 VA and seats in a DIN socket for tool-free coil changes. What a 3/2 Valve Does
A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.

Swiss-lathe fixture clamp
On a Swiss-type turning centre, the valve actuates a miniature spring-return clamp on the bar-feed fixture, wired into the machine's 24V AC control bus at just 5.0 VA.
Guarded cutting-zone air curtain
An M5 air curtain blows chips away from a guarded cutting zone only while the interlock circuit holds, and the spring return kills the jet the moment the guard opens.
Kettle-line pilot stage
In a food plant, the valve pilots a larger process valve admitting steam to a cooking kettle, cycling from the 24V AC control circuit without adding meaningful load to it.
Is the Airtac 3V1 Solenoid Valve 3V1M5E the Right Part?
Choose 3V1 for the smallest port and the gentlest footprint in the 3V line-up, but note that no Cv or effective-area figure is published for it - any flow-sensitive M5 application deserves a quick check with us. When the circuit outgrows it, 3V2 gives you 1/8" or 1/4" ports, an NC or NO selectable function and Cv 0.18-0.19, while 3V3 raises the ceiling at Cv 0.62 on 1/4". Where the priority is packing valves tightly rather than flow, look at 3V2M. Double-acting cylinders are a job for the AirTAC 4V series, not this valve.
