A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
A spring-return clamping cylinder on a jig or fixture holds the workpiece only while it is fed air. This normally closed 3/2 valve energises to clamp, and on power loss it vents the clamp so the spring retracts - the fail-safe direction for loading and unloading parts.
A nozzle on the outlet clears chips and coolant from a machined part at the end of a cycle. The valve gives a clean on/off of the air jet, and because it is normally closed, nothing blows while the machine is powered down or the door interlock drops the 24V rail.
A small 3/2 valve switches the vent on a suction-cup circuit so the gripper lets the sheet-metal part go at the drop-off station. The flying-lead entry wires straight into the panel terminations of a gantry or robot cell without needing a plug socket on the valve body.
Start with the fail-safe state. Normally closed means no air at the outlet until the coil is energised, which is what most single-acting circuits want: on power loss the actuator vents and retracts or drops by spring. If your machine must pass air when power is lost, choose the NO variant instead - same body, opposite resting behaviour. The 1/8in G port is the smaller of the piped sizes here; if your single-acting cylinder or clamp has a bore above roughly 40mm, step up to the 1/4in body in this family so the exhaust does not choke the return stroke.
The DC24V coil must match your panel supply - a 24VDC coil will not hold reliably on 24VAC and cannot be converted by rewiring, so order the voltage letter you actually have. Flying-lead entry suits terminal strips and junction boxes; if you prefer a pluggable connector for quick coil swaps, take the DIN-plug version of the same valve.
