About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X700S

The AirTAC BSAI125X700-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. A defining advantage over stroke-end-only variants is that this enclasp gripper clamps the carbon steel piston rod at ANY position along its 700 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 8600 N. Because it includes a magnet (-S), it integrates seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors for precise position verification.

It is crucial to distinguish this 8600 N holding force from the cylinder's standard thrust, which reaches 6136 N at 0.5 MPa (8590 N at the 0.7 MPa maximum). The clamp holds the static load independently of pneumatic thrust, but the variable air cushions at the stroke ends only decelerate the moving piston; they do not secure the load. The clamp operates via a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release, and locks only after the rod has come to a complete stop.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X700S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Secures heavy vertical actuators at any intermediate height during power loss, utilizing the 8600 N clamp to prevent gravity-driven drops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the 125 mm rod at a specific travel point to withstand cutting forces or heavy workpiece loading without relying on live air pressure.

Mid-Stroke Safety Stop

Holds the load safely anywhere along the 700 mm travel during emergency stops, acting as a reliable static brake once motion ceases.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X700S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this 125 mm bore model when an application demands exceptional mid-stroke positioning and heavy-load holding that smaller bores cannot match. If your load requires less force, stepping down to the 100 mm bore offers 3927 N thrust at 0.5 MPa and a 5500 N holding capacity, but this BSAI125X700-S provides the maximum holding power available in the series. Choose this clamp-lock version over a plain SAI cylinder when power loss could cause the load to drop or drift, and over a SAIL cylinder when you must hold securely at intermediate positions rather than just at the stroke ends.

When replacing or specifying this unit, verify you need a single-rod configuration with a 700 mm stroke, PT tapered port threads (1/2 inch cylinder ports plus the G1/8 unlock port), and the -S magnet option. The mounting interface accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 brackets. Because the stroke is 700 mm, the M27x2 rod thread provides substantial side-load capacity, but an external guide is still strongly recommended for such a long, unsupported travel to prevent undue wear on the enclasp mechanism.

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X700S FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 8600 N. It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to grip the rod bidirectionally at any position along the stroke, holding the load securely even when air pressure is removed.

The clamp unlocks only after applying 0.15-0.7 MPa to the G1/8 enclasp port AND balancing the air pressures on both sides of the piston. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release. It also only locks after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load.
