About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X250

The AirTAC BSAID100X250 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod out both ends and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers an equal 3681 N of thrust in both directions at 0.5 MPa, while the separate enclasp mechanism provides a robust 5500 N static holding force. Buyers must distinguish between these two quantities: thrust moves the load, but the clamp holding force is what secures the static payload. You size the hold against the load, not the push value.

This bidirectional clamp locks the piston rod at any position along the 250 mm stroke, but only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. The double-rod layout is specifically chosen to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end, providing dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. The enclasp mechanism uses a third G1/8 port (separate from the 1/2 cylinder ports) and requires balanced air pressure to unlock safely, preventing the rod from jumping abruptly upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X250 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Z-Axis Hold

Secures a vertically lifted payload at any intermediate height with 5500 N of holding force, preventing a crash if air pressure drops mid-stroke.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Clamps a dual-side workpiece fixture rigidly in place during drilling or milling, using the second rod end for an external anti-rotation guide.

shield

Emergency Power-Loss Hold

The spring-applied clamp engages instantly upon loss of air anywhere along the 250 mm travel, freezing the load until pressure is restored.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X250 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when an application demands 3681 N of thrust both ways alongside a 5500 N hold anywhere in travel. If you only need to hold at the stroke end, a plain SAIL100 saves complexity, or a standard SAID100 if no lock is required. To step down, an 80 mm bore offers 2268 N pull thrust and 3600 N holding force. To step up, a 125 mm bore provides 5734 N thrust both ways and 8600 N holding force.

As a double-rod unit, the BSAID100X250 omits the FB, CA, CB, and CR mountings, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 brackets. It uses PT tapered ports and a standard carbon steel rod with an M20x1.5 thread. Without a magnet, it lacks sensor feedback; if tracking is needed, specify the -S option for CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. Always ensure the rod has stopped and pressures are balanced before unlocking, and add an independent safety measure for human-safety-critical holds.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X250 FAQ

It provides a 5500 N static holding force and locks the rod at any position along the 250 mm stroke. The clamp is bidirectional and holds the load whether the rod was extending or retracting.

The clamp unlocks only when air pressure on both sides of the piston is balanced and the rod has stopped. Releasing it while unbalanced will cause the rod to jump abruptly. It is a holding brake, not a moving-rod decelerator.
