About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X500

The AirTAC BSAID125X500 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers an equal thrust of 5734 N in both directions at 0.5 MPa, while the integrated enclasp mechanism provides a robust 8600 N static holding force. This bidirectional lock engages at any position along the 500 mm travel. A critical distinction exists between holding force and thrust: the 8600 N clamp capacity resists a static load independently of the 5734 N pneumatic thrust, meaning you must size the lock against the load weight, not the cylinder's push force.

Unlike a standard cushion, the clamp physically grips the 32 mm carbon steel rod to hold the load without live air pressure. Note that the lock only engages after the piston stops; it cannot brake a moving rod. Release requires balanced air pressure on both sides via the G1/8 enclasp port, preventing abrupt rod jumps. The double-rod layout allows mounting a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the other, providing dual-side anti-rotation guidance. Operating pressure is 0.15-0.7 MPa.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X500 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Locks a heavy vertical workpiece at any point in the 500mm travel, preventing gravity-induced drops during an air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Positioning

Holds the dual-rod tooling platform rigidly in place for secondary machining or inspection operations without relying on live air.

shield

Emergency Safety Stop

Provides a bidirectional 8600N clamp to freeze a stopped load instantly anywhere along the stroke, acting as a fail-safe against unexpected movement.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X500 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore when an application requires heavy mid-stroke holding, such as a vertical axis that must not drop on power loss. If the 8600 N holding force or 5734 N pull thrust is excessive, stepping down to the 100 mm bore drops the holding force to 5500 N and pull thrust to 3681 N. Conversely, if you only need to hold at the stroke ends, a plain SAI or SAIL cylinder is simpler and cheaper. The BSAID125X500 is specifically for equal-force, dual-side guidance tasks. For safety-critical human loads, add an independent mechanical lock, as this clamp cannot arrest dynamic motion.

This model uses PT tapered ports (1/2 inch cylinder ports, G1/8 enclasp port). The 32 mm rod and M27x2 thread handle high side loads, but at 500 mm stroke, an external guide rail is still recommended to prevent binding. Mounting is limited to Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). As no magnet is specified, position sensing requires adding a -S option for CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X500 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 8600 N. It engages via a spring-applied mechanism at any position along the 500 mm stroke and holds bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has completely stopped moving.

The lock is air-released via a separate G1/8 enclasp port. To prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced before unlocking. The lock is not a dynamic brake and cannot stop a moving load.
