About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X125S

The AirTAC BSAID40X125-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper secures the piston rod at any position along its 125mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 900 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 528 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a position flag or secondary tool on the opposite end.

It is vital to distinguish this 900 N holding force from the 528 N cylinder thrust; the clamp sustains static loads independently of pneumatic pressure, while thrust drives the motion. The lock engages via a third G1/8 enclasp port and only activates after the rod has completely stopped—it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, the variable air cushions at the stroke ends only decelerate the piston; they do not hold the load. The integrated magnet works with CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors for precise position feedback.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X125S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Locks a lifted workpiece securely at any intermediate height along the vertical stroke to prevent gravity-induced drops during processing.

shield

Power Loss Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically upon air pressure loss, freezing the double-rod payload exactly where it stopped.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Uses the second rod for a counterweight while the primary end holds a part rigidly against machining vibration with 900 N of force.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X125S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod configuration when your application requires equal push/pull forces (528 N both ways at 0.5 MPa) and dual-side mounting for anti-rotation or external guidance. If you only need end-of-stroke holding, a plain SAIL cylinder suffices, but the BSAID series is necessary when intermediate locking is required. If your static load exceeds 900 N, step up to the 50 mm bore, which provides 825 N of thrust and a 1400 N holding force. For lighter loads, the 32 mm bore offers 345 N thrust and 600 N holding force.

When replacing this unit, match the 40 mm bore, 125 mm stroke, PT tapered port threads, and double-rod architecture. The mounting interface is dimensionally interchangeable per ISO 15552, but BSAID supports a specific set of mounts: Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 (omitting FB, CA, CB, and CR). The clamp locks only after the cylinder stops and must be unlocked with balanced air pressures (0.15-0.7 MPa) to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. For safety-critical applications, always add an independent external safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X125S FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 900 N. It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism that grips the rod at any position along the stroke, holding the load bidirectionally without requiring live air pressure.

The clamp unlocks only when air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced via the G1/8 enclasp port, preventing the rod from jumping. It is a static hold only; it cannot brake a moving rod and locks only after the cylinder has stopped.
