About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X200

The AirTAC BSAID40X200 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and an integrated clamp-lock. A spring-applied, air-released mechanism grips the rod to hold the load at any position along its 200 mm travel, providing a static holding force of 900 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, it delivers equal thrust in both directions, generating 528 N of push and pull force at 0.5 MPa. You must size the 900 N holding capacity against your static load, as this clamp force is entirely separate from the cylinder's thrust output.

This enclasp unit uses a third G1/8 unlock port, distinct from the 1/4 cylinder ports, and requires a balanced 0.15-0.7 MPa air pressure to release safely. The double-rod architecture allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the opposite end, providing dual-side anti-rotation. Remember that the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is the sole device responsible for holding the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X200 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Locks a lifted load at any intermediate height with 900 N of holding force, preventing gravity-driven drops during an air-loss event.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Secures a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place for machining or inspection, using the second rod for a position flag or counterweight.

shield

Emergency Stop Safety

Holds the mechanism wherever it stops during an E-stop, though an independent safety measure is required for human safety hazards.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X200 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when a tool or fixture requires dual-side guidance and equal 528 N bi-directional thrust at 0.5 MPa alongside a 900 N holding force. If your application only needs to hold at the stroke end, a plain SAIL lock cylinder suffices, but BSAID is required for mid-stroke clamping. For higher load capacities, stepping up to a 50 mm bore provides 825 N of thrust and a 1400 N clamp force. The clamp engages only after the rod stops moving; it cannot brake a moving load, and unlocking requires balanced piston pressures to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. For safety-critical operations, add an independent external safety measure.

As a replacement, verify the 40 mm bore, 200 mm stroke, PT port threads, and carbon steel rods. The BSAID supports Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts, omitting the FB, CA, CB, and CR styles found on single-rod variants. This unit does not include a magnet; add the -S option if you require CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state position sensing. Its 16 mm rod diameter and M12x1.25 thread offer robust side-load capacity, though long unsupported strokes should still use an external guide.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X200 FAQ

It provides a static holding force of 900 N. The spring-applied clamp locks the rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving; it is not a dynamic braking system.

The clamp releases via a third G1/8 enclasp port using 0.15-0.7 MPa air. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, or the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical loads require an additional independent measure.
