About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X1000S

The AirTAC BSAID50X1000-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 1400 N at any position along its 1000 mm stroke. Because it is a double-rod actuator, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a counterweight, position flag, or secondary tool on the opposite end for dual-side guidance.

It is crucial to distinguish holding force from thrust: the 1400 N clamp capacity resists an external static load independently of the 825 N cylinder thrust, so you must size the lock against the load, not the drive power. Furthermore, the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the enclasp clamp is the actual holding device. The lock engages via a third G1/8 port and requires balanced pressure to release safely.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X1000S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Locks a 1400 N vertical load securely at any intermediate height without relying on continuous air pressure.

shield

Power Failure Safety

Spring-applied clamp engages instantly upon air loss to freeze the dual-rod position mid-stroke.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Positioning

Holds the workpiece steady via the second rod for dual-side guidance during drilling or inspection.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X1000S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod configuration when a load needs guided support on both sides or when a secondary mechanism must attach to the rear rod. If you need less holding capacity, the 40 mm bore offers 900 N holding force and 528 N pull thrust; if your application requires more rigidity, the 63 mm bore provides 2200 N holding force and 1402 N pull thrust. A plain SAID is sufficient if you only need equal thrust without mid-stroke locking, while a SAIL only grips at stroke ends.

The clamp locks only after the rod stops; it cannot brake a moving load. Release requires balanced air pressure on both sides, or the rod may jump abruptly—safety-critical applications need an independent backup. At 1000 mm stroke, the 20 mm rod and M16x1.5 thread handle side loads well, but an external guide rail is strongly recommended to prevent binding. This unit includes a magnet for CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors, uses PT ports, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X1000S FAQ

It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to grip the rod with 1400 N of static holding force at any position. It only engages after the cylinder has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod.

The double-rod layout provides equal thrust (825 N at 0.5 MPa) in both directions and allows you to mount a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for anti-rotation and dual-side guidance.
