About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250S

The AirTAC BSAID50X250-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 extruded profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 250mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 1400 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, its 825 N thrust at 0.5 MPa remains equal in both extension and retraction directions. Remember that holding force and thrust are distinct quantities; you must size the 1400 N clamp capacity against your static load, not the 825 N cylinder thrust.

A defining benefit of the double-rod design is enabling dual-side workpiece mounting, such as attaching a primary tool on one end and a counterweight, position flag, or anti-rotation guide on the opposite end. The lock engages via a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, which is entirely separate from the 1/4 cylinder ports. Note that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke limits; the mechanical clamp is what truly holds the load. Furthermore, the clamp locks only after the rod stops moving and requires balanced air pressure to unlock safely, preventing sudden rod jumps.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Suspends a vertical load at any intermediate height using the 1400 N clamp, preventing gravity-driven drops during an air or power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Locks a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place for machining or inspection, using the second rod end for a position flag.

shield

Emergency Arrest

Provides a reliable mid-stroke hold to secure a stopped load during unexpected energy cutoffs, requiring a full stop before locking.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this double-rod model when you need equal push/pull force (825 N both ways at 0.5 MPa) alongside multi-axis mounting flexibility. If your application only requires holding at the stroke end, a SAIL cylinder suffices, but choose the BSAID50X250-S when you must arrest and hold the load anywhere in the 250mm travel. If your load exceeds the 1400 N holding capacity, step up to the 63mm bore, which provides 1402 N of thrust and a 2200 N clamp. The 20mm rod and M16x1.5 thread offer robust side-load handling, but for a 250mm stroke, an external guide is still recommended to prevent binding.

This model includes a magnet (-S) for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors, using PT tapered ports. It supports a restricted mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2) because the double-rod configuration omits FB, CA, CB, and CR. For safety-critical loads, an independent external holding measure is required, as the clamp cannot brake a moving rod and only engages once the piston is stationary.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250S FAQ

It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to grip the 20mm rod at any position, providing a static holding force of 1400 N. It is bidirectional and holds equally whether the rod was extending or retracting.

No, the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressure to prevent sudden rod movement, and safety-critical loads require an independent external measure.
