The AirTAC BSAID50X350 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and an integrated clamp-lock. A spring-applied, air-released mechanism grips the carbon steel rod at any point along its 350 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 1400 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is identical in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and having a rod extending from each end allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide or counterweight on the other for dual-side anti-rotation.

It is vital to separate holding force from thrust: the 1400 N clamp rating is the static load capacity of the brake, not the 825 N pneumatic thrust. The clamp only engages after the piston stops, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, the variable air cushion merely decelerates the piston near stroke ends, while the clamp provides the actual position holding. Release requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston via the G1/8 enclasp port to prevent abrupt rod jumps.

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X350 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod clamp-lock when you need to suspend a load mid-stroke and require symmetric force. If your application only needs holding at the stroke ends, a plain SAIL cylinder suffices, but BSAID wins when intermediate locking is required. If you need higher holding capacity, stepping up to bore 63 provides a 2200 N clamp force and 1402 N thrust. For this 350 mm stroke, the 20 mm rod and M16x1.5 thread offer good side-load capacity, but an external guide rail is still recommended to prevent binding.

This PT-port model operates at 0.15-0.7 MPa with speeds of 30-800 mm/s. It accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR due to the double-rod structure). As no magnet is specified, it will not support CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors without modification. Remember that for human-safety critical stops, an additional independent mechanical measure is required, as the clamp unlocks only under balanced pressure.
