Airtac PTB Single Acting Pen-Type Cylinder PTB16X5R

The AirTAC Airtac PTB Single Acting Pen-Type Cylinder PTB16X5R is a single acting, pull type (spring extend) pen-size mini cylinder with a Ø16mm bore and 5mm stroke. A single air port drives the pull stroke; the built-in return spring resets the rod when air is released, so only one solenoid line is needed.

About the Airtac PTB Single Acting Pen-Type Cylinder PTB16X5R

The AirTAC PTB16X5R is a JIS pen-size single-acting pull cylinder where air entering one M5x0.8 port retracts the rod, while an internal spring pushes it back out. It provides 65 N of net pull at 0.5 MPa and 101.2 N at the 0.7 MPa maximum. Because the return spring constantly resists the air stroke, the rod stays safely extended if pneumatic pressure drops.

This variant features an axial R back cover for inline plumbing and a SUS304 stainless build. A fixed TPU bumper cushions the end caps. For practical sizing, plan for about 39 N of real work, which is roughly 60 percent of the 0.5 MPa rating to account for seal friction.

Speed range50 – 800 mm/s
ReturnReturn spring (pull by air)
Max standard strokeUp to 60 mm

The spring holds the rod extended; applying air retracts it, and removing air lets the spring push the rod back out. Forces below are the NET spring-deducted values from the AirTAC thrust table. Confirm against the product label before installation.

Net Pull Force (Ø16mm)

PressureNet pull force
0.5 MPa65.0 N
0.7 MPa (max)101.2 N

These are the usable pull forces after the return spring is subtracted, taken directly from the AirTAC single-acting thrust table. Minimum operating pressure is set by the spring, so this model needs at least the lower pressure shown to move.

Where the Airtac PTB Single Acting Pen-Type Cylinder PTB16X5R Is Used

pan_tool

Hold-Down Clamping

Uses the spring-extend fail-safe to maintain downward clamping pressure on a workpiece when shop air is removed or exhausted.

straighten

Wire Tensioner

Pulls back to tension wires or belts during operation and safely releases the tension by extending when the air supply stops.

conveyor_belt

Retract-to-Open Gate

Briefly retracts a 5 mm stroke to open a diverter gate on a conveyor, relying on the spring to push the gate closed.

Is the Airtac PTB Single Acting Pen-Type Cylinder PTB16X5R the Right Cylinder?

This 16 mm bore offers the highest net pull in the PTB family. If your task needs less force, stepping down to the 12 mm bore yields 33.1 N at 0.5 MPa. Since this is the largest available pen size, there is no larger option within the series. The internal spring requires at least 0.2 MPa before motion begins.

The short 5 mm stroke is ideal for quick clamping or holding tasks. The rod end features an M10x1.0 thread, and the air connection is M5x0.8. Keep in mind the thin Ø5 mm rod is designed for coaxial thrust, so use an external guide if your application involves any side loading.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Net pull force at your working pressure
  • ✓ Only one air line / solenoid needed
  • ✓ Fail-safe extend on air loss
  • ✓ Magnet (S) for sensors?
  • ✓ Stroke ≤ 60 mm (single-acting limit)
  • ✓ Keep the load coaxial — avoid side load

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • check Use clean air filtered to 40µm or finer.
  • check Keep within 0.2 – 0.7 MPa operating pressure.
  • check Allow for spring force in the stroke direction.
  • check Do not add an external return mechanism.
  • check Keep the load coaxial; avoid side load on the thin rod.
  • check Do not dismantle the front or back cover.

Airtac PTB Single Acting Pen-Type Cylinder PTB16X5R FAQ

It delivers 65 N of net pull at 0.5 MPa and 101.2 N at the 0.7 MPa maximum. Because an internal spring holds the rod extended, a minimum of 0.2 MPa is required to overcome the spring and retract the rod.

A fixed TPU bumper decelerates the rod over the last few millimeters of travel. It is not adjustable, so at high speeds with heavy tooling you should meter-out the exhaust or add an external shock absorber. This specific model does not include a sensor magnet.
