Airtac STA Single Acting Compact Guided Cylinder STA20X20S

The AirTAC Airtac STA Single Acting Compact Guided Cylinder STA20X20S is a genuine single-acting COMPACT cylinder (single acting, pull type) with a Ø20mm bore and 20mm stroke. Air pulles the rod and an internal spring returns it, so one solenoid line drives the motion — ideal for short-stroke clamping and ejection in tight spaces.

About the Airtac STA Single Acting Compact Guided Cylinder STA20X20S

The AirTAC STA20X20S is a compact single-acting pull-type cylinder where compressed air retracts the 8 mm rod and an internal spring pushes it back out. It provides 108.9 N of net pull at 0.5 MPa, safely handling a working load of about 65 N or a 5.6 kg vertical lift with a 2:1 margin. Because the spring performs the extension stroke, only one M5x0.8 air line is required.

This thin riveted body saves axial mounting depth where standard round-body or profile cylinders will not fit. The unit features a fixed NBR bumper to decelerate the stroke end and includes a built-in piston magnet for position sensing. It operates at speeds between 50 and 500 mm/s across a temperature range of -20 to +70 C.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC SDA-family datasheet. Single-acting types start at 0.2 MPa (the spring must be overcome). Confirm against the product label before installation.

Net Output Force (Ø20mm, Pull)

PressurePull force (net)

Where the Airtac STA Single Acting Compact Guided Cylinder STA20X20S Is Used

conveyor_belt

Tension Gate Return

Uses the spring-extend function to hold a guide gate open on a conveyor, while the 108.9 N air pull snaps it shut to divert packages.

packaging

Film Clamp Release

Pulls a clamping jaw back against the spring to release packaging film, fitting easily into tight machinery due to the short riveted body.

vertical_align_center

Vertical Hold-Down

Lifts a 5.6 kg vertical load out of a fixture using the net pull force, letting the internal spring push the actuator clear when air is removed.

Is the Airtac STA Single Acting Compact Guided Cylinder STA20X20S the Right Cylinder?

When sizing this model, compare its 108.9 N net pull at 0.5 MPa against adjacent bores. Stepping down, the STA16 yields 66.4 N; stepping up, the STA25 provides 177.7 N. This 20 mm bore uses an M5x0.8 port and a female M4x0.7 rod-end thread. The 20 mm stroke sits well below the 30 mm single-acting ceiling.

Remember the spring-extend behavior: on air loss the rod drives to its extended rest position and will not hold a mid-stroke load. Operating pressure must be 0.2-1.0 MPa to overcome the spring. This configuration includes the -S magnet for reed or electronic switches and uses the default female rod thread.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Net pull force at your working pressure
  • ✓ Stroke ≤ 30 mm (single-acting limit)
  • ✓ Single air line saves a valve/port
  • ✓ Magnet (S) for sensors?
  • ✓ Female (blank) or male (B) rod thread

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • check Use clean air filtered to 40µm or finer.
  • check Keep within 0.2 – 1.0 MPa operating pressure.
  • check Remember the spring performs the return stroke.
  • check Avoid side load on the short piston rod.
  • check Front/rear covers are riveted — do not dismantle.
  • check Installation by qualified personnel per AirTAC docs.

Airtac STA Single Acting Compact Guided Cylinder STA20X20S FAQ

The net pull force is 108.9 N at 0.5 MPa and 161.7 N at 0.7 MPa. These figures already account for the internal return spring resistance.

Air pressure retracts the rod, requiring at least 0.2 MPa to overcome the spring. When air is released, the spring extends the rod back out, meaning it will not hold a mid-stroke load without live pressure.
