Series Overview

The AirTAC 3V series is a 3-port, 2-position (3/2) solenoid valve: one supply, one outlet, one exhaust, two states. It either connects supply to the outlet or vents the outlet to exhaust, making it the valve for jobs a 5-port unit cannot do economically: single-acting (spring-return) cylinders, on/off air blow and clamping, vacuum generator or suction-cup switching, and piloting larger valves. Every body here is single-solenoid with spring return, needs no lubrication and carries a manual override for setup. A 3/2 cannot drive a double-acting cylinder - that is a job for the 5-port AirTAC 4V series.

We stock two distinct 3V lines. Line A is the direct-acting catalogue bodies: 3V1 (M5 or PT1/8, the low-power pick at 3.0 W on DC24V), 3V2 (PT1/8 or PT1/4, NC or NO, vacuum-rated), 3V2M (the same function on a dedicated base for 1 to 20 station manifolds, with centralised or independent exhaust) and 3V3 (PT1/4, the highest-flow body at Cv 0.62). All Line A bodies work at 0-0.8 MPa (0-114 psi) and -20 to 70 C, carry IP65 (DIN 40050) protection, take five standard voltages (AC220V, AC110V, AC24V, DC24V, DC12V) and offer DIN plug or flying-lead entry. Line B is the 3V1x0 model family - 3V110/3V120, 3V210/3V220 and 3V310/3V320 in M5 to 3/8 in ports - stocked with matching 3V-F manifold bases in 1 to 20 stations; confirm its pressure, flow and electrical figures from the datasheet or ask us.

Three details decide most purchases. Flow: the Cv ladder runs 0.1 (3V2M), 0.18 and 0.19 (3V2), 0.62 (3V3), so a 3V3 passes roughly six times the flow of a 3V2M, and a 3V2M gives up about half of a 3V2's flow because the path crosses its base. Vacuum: only 3V2 and 3V3 carry the stated -102.2 kPa to 0.1 MPa rating, so keep a 3V2M out of the vacuum path. Initial state: NC and NO are order-time choices on 3V2, 3V2M and 3V3 and are not field-convertible - the catalogue explicitly warns that flipping the 3V2M base gasket does not convert NC to NO - while 3V1 ships in a single fixed initial state, so confirm it on the datasheet. A 3V206 (PT1/8, Cv 0.18) or one station of a 3V2M manifold drives the spring-return cylinder on a carton sealing or taping head: the 3/2 pressurises the cylinder to make the seal and exhausts it so the spring retracts, with no return line and no 5-port valve.

Between filling and capping, a 3V3 (PT1/4, Cv 0.62) pulses compressed air to clear dust and splash from bottle necks. Its Cv passes roughly six times the flow of a 3V2M station, and the valve simply connects supply to the nozzle or vents it - the on/off blow duty a 3/2 exists for.

Suction cups lift layers of cartons from a pallet; a vacuum-rated 3V2 or 3V3, rated -102.2 kPa to 0.1 MPa, sits between the vacuum generator and the cups and vents them to release each layer. Only these two 3V bodies carry the vacuum rating, so keep 3V2M out of the vacuum path.

How to Choose the Right Model

Start with the duty, not the port thread. Confirm you need three ports at all: a single-acting cylinder, a blow or clamp line, vacuum switching or pilot duty. If the actuator is double-acting, step out of the series to the 5-port AirTAC 4V; if the medium is water, oil or steam, the AirTAC 2V process range is the right family. Within the series, size by flow rather than by thread: 3V2M (Cv 0.1) for compact manifold banks, 3V2 (Cv 0.18/0.19) for individual stations, 3V3 (Cv 0.62) where a station needs speed. Then choose NC (no power, no air at the outlet) or NO (passes air until energised, for fail-open duties); on 3V2M that choice is fixed at order time. Need vacuum? Only 3V2 and 3V3 are rated for it.

Decide individual valves versus a manifold: one or two functions suit individual valves, while several justify a 3V2M manifold or a 3V-F base with one shared air feed and one wiring loom. Budget the power supply for the worst case - a fully populated 20-station 3V2M bank draws about 140 W on DC24V, close to 6 A, with every coil energised. On a battery-backed or current-limited panel, or across a large bank, prefer 3V1 at 3.0 W per valve, well under half the 7.0 W of 3V2 or 3V2M; on AC, note 3V3's 10 VA, the highest AC figure in the range, where several coils switch together. Finish with the 5-point match: function and initial state, flow (Cv), port thread and body, manifold or individual mounting, voltage and electrical entry. Upstream, filter the air to 40 um or better - a GFR filter-regulator or GC F.R.L. unit does exactly that.

No on both counts. A 3/2 valve has one working outlet, so it cannot alternately pressurise and exhaust the two chambers a double-acting cylinder needs - use a 5-port AirTAC 4V valve for that. The 3V medium is compressed air only; water, oil or steam belong on the AirTAC 2V process range. The air must be filtered to 40 um or finer - exactly what an upstream GFR filter-regulator or GC F.R.L. unit delivers - and the valves need no lubrication.
