AirTAC Pneumatics
The AirTAC MSA is a single-acting push mini cylinder with spring return, covering 16-40 mm bores and 60-440 N thrust at 0.5 MPa - a compact round-body actuator for clamping, ejecting and short-stroke positioning.
inventory_2224 models availableThe MSA is AirTAC's standard round-body mini cylinder in single-acting push form: compressed air extends the rod, and a return spring retracts it to its home position the moment air is removed. The range runs five bores - 16, 20, 25, 32 and 40 mm - with thrust at 0.5 MPa of roughly 60 N (16 mm, 6 mm rod) up to 440 N (40 mm, 16 mm rod), all measured net of the return spring. Strokes are short by design: up to 100 mm on the 16 mm bore and up to 150 mm on the 20-40 mm bores.
Every MSA shares the same construction: a high-precision stainless-steel barrel with rolling-packed aluminium-alloy front and back covers and a stainless-steel block, plus a carbon-steel piston rod hard-chrome plated to 20 um. The piston uses a two-way seal that also stores grease, so the cylinder runs on air filtered to 40 um with no lubrication required. Working pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi), proof pressure 1.5 MPa, temperature -20 to +70 C, speed 50-800 mm/s, and cushioning is by fixed bumper pads. Ports are M5x0.8 on the 16 mm bore and 1/8" on the 20-40 mm bores. The catalogue carries no standard designation (it is not ISO 6432 or JIS), so specify MSA models by AirTAC code.
A magnet is built in as standard on every MSA, so the -S option simply enables CMSG, DMSG or EMSG reed or solid-state switches for end-of-stroke sensing. If you need a powered return, step to the double-acting MA or MAC series; for single-acting pull (spring extends, air retracts), the MTA is the counterpart.

Spring-return push cylinders are the classic choice for hold-and-release clamping: air applies the clamp and a lost-air fault retracts the MSA rod automatically. The 25-40 mm bores deliver 172-440 N of net clamp force at 0.5 MPa, with a built-in magnet for clamp-confirmed sensing.
Short strokes and 50-800 mm/s speed make the MSA suited to kicking rejects or nudging product off a conveyor. The fixed bumper pads absorb the stop at each stroke end, and the compact round body fits tight machine framing.
For light pressing, staking or marking tasks, the 32-40 mm bores supply 281-440 N of push with a spring that retracts the tooling between cycles - no exhaust-side air circuit needed, which simplifies valve plumbing to a single 4V or 3V solenoid valve.
Since the magnet is built in on every MSA, adding a CMSG or DMSG switch gives end-of-stroke confirmation for PLC interlocks - useful in test and sortation cells where the eject stroke must be proven before the next part is released.
Size the bore to the force your load needs at your working pressure, not just at rated pressure: keep the 0.5 MPa thrust figures as ratings and plan for roughly 60% of the rating as real work, then add the stroke. Use the 16 mm bore for light clamps and indexing (about 60 N), the 25 mm for medium tooling (about 172 N), and the 32-40 mm bores where 281-440 N of push is needed. Because the return spring sets the minimum working pressure at 0.2 MPa and the spring only returns the rod to its retracted home position, the MSA suits circuits that need a fail-safe retract rather than a mid-stroke hold.
Confirm the five-point match before ordering: bore, stroke, port thread (M5x0.8 at 16 mm, 1/8" at 20-40 mm, in PT, G or NPT), mounting style, and the magnet -S code for your CMSG/DMSG/EMSG switch. Step out of the series when the requirements change direction or return: pick the MTA for single-acting pull, or the MA/MAC double-acting series for a powered return, longer strokes or an adjustable cushion.
Quick checklist
At 0.5 MPa working pressure, net of the return spring, datasheet thrust spans roughly 60 N on the 16 mm bore (6 mm rod), 110 N on 20 mm, 172 N on 25 mm, 281 N on 32 mm and 440 N on the 40 mm bore (16 mm rod). These are ratings; plan for about 60% of the figure as usable work, and confirm exact values from the datasheet for your stroke.
The MSA is single-acting push: air extends the rod and a return spring retracts it. The MTA is the opposite - single-acting pull, where the spring extends and air retracts. The MA and MAC are double-acting, giving a powered return in both directions, longer strokes and adjustable cushioning. Choose MSA/MTA for a spring-defined fail-safe position and MA/MAC when you need controlled motion on both strokes.
No. The MSA is AirTAC's standard round-body mini cylinder and the catalogue assigns it no ISO 6432 or JIS designation, so replace like-for-like by AirTAC ordering code: MSA{bore}X{stroke}[S][back-cover][mount][thread]. New units ship with a built-in magnet as standard, so an -S code matches existing CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches.
Ports are M5x0.8 on the 16 mm bore and 1/8" on the 20-40 mm bores, ordered as PT, G or NPT to match your market's fittings.
