A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
Extends a single-acting swing clamp on a machining fixture only while the control output is live, so an e-stop or power cut lets the spring release the part.
Keeps the air supply to a gated cell shut off until the guard circuit energises the coil, dumping the downstream air whenever the gate opens.

The 1/4in port is the middle step: more capacity for a single-acting actuator than the 1/8in size, without moving up to the 3/8in bodies. NC is the usual fail-safe choice, because de-energising vents the downstream circuit. Check that the AC110V coil matches your panel before ordering - coil voltage is set at the factory and cannot be changed afterwards. The DIN plug connection keeps the wiring tidy and lets a faulty valve be swapped without rewiring.
