A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
Energising the valve cuts the standing air feed to a single-acting press clamp and dumps it to exhaust, so the operator's control button alone governs when pressure reaches the workpiece.

Normally open is a fail-state decision, not a preference: if a power cut must keep a blow line running or a clamp fed, NO is correct; if a power cut must instead cut the air and vent the line, order the NC version of the same body. The 1/4in port steps up from the 1/8in and M5 options, so it suits a bigger single-acting cylinder or a heavier blow duty - and remember a 3/2 valve can never drive a double-acting cylinder, which needs a 5-port AirTAC 4V.
