AirTAC Pneumatics
The AirTAC MTA is a single-acting pull mini cylinder with a built-in return spring, covering 16-40 mm bores and strokes to 100 mm - air retracts the rod, the spring extends it home.
inventory_2179 models availableThe MTA is AirTAC's standard round-body mini cylinder in a single-acting pull configuration: compressed air retracts the rod, and a return spring extends it back to its home position whenever air is removed. The range spans five bores - 16, 20, 25, 32 and 40 mm - with rods from 6 to 16 mm and strokes up to 100 mm. Net pull force at 0.5 MPa (measured after the spring's own resistance) runs from about 46 N on the 16 mm bore to about 339 N on the 40 mm bore.
Construction is a rolling-packed body: a high-precision stainless-steel barrel with aluminium-alloy front and back covers and a stainless-steel block riveted and rolled onto it, forming one reliably sealed unit. The piston rod is carbon steel with a 20 um hard-chrome plating, and the piston uses a two-way seal that also stores grease, so lubrication is not required. Ports are M5x0.8 on the 16 mm bore and 1/8" on the 20-40 mm bores. Cushioning is by fixed bumper pads, not adjustable cushions.
A magnet is built in as standard on every MTA model, so end-of-stroke sensing only needs a CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switch ordered alongside. Note that the MTA carries no ISO 6432 or JIS designation - it is an AirTAC-specific round body, so specify it by the AirTAC ordering code. If you need the opposite direction, the MSA is the single-acting push version; the MA and MAC families are double-acting for powered strokes both ways.

On a compact machining or assembly fixture, the spring keeps the rod extended to hold the clamp while air applied to the MTA retracts it for loading. If air pressure is lost, the spring returns the workpiece-holding position automatically.
A reject or diverting gate on a packaging line that must spring open when air is removed suits the MTA's pull action: air strokes the gate closed, the built-in spring restores the open home position, and the standard magnet signals end-of-stroke via a CMSG or DMSG switch.
Sample handling and small test rigs in the 16-25 mm bores use the MTA's short strokes (to 100 mm) and 46-133 N pull range, with the stainless barrel and grease-storing two-way seal keeping the unit maintenance-light in clean environments.
A stopper or gate on a light-duty conveyor line uses the 32-40 mm bores for up to 339 N of pull, retracting under air pressure to release product and springing back out the moment air pressure drops.
Start with the force: size the bore to your working pressure, not the 0.5 MPa rating - plan on roughly 60% of the rated pull as real work and keep a margin. As a guide, the 16 mm bore gives about 46 N net pull and the 40 mm bore about 339 N at 0.5 MPa, with 85, 133 and 225 N in between for the 20, 25 and 32 mm bores. Then pick the stroke (up to 100 mm in this series), confirm the port for your bore (M5x0.8 at 16 mm, 1/8" at 20-40 mm), choose the mounting for the load, and match the thread standard - PT, G or NPT - to your shop's fittings. Add the S code if you are not ordering a model with magnet already, and pair it with a CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switch for position feedback.
Step out of the series when the direction or duty changes: pick the MSA if you need a single-acting push cylinder (air extends, spring retracts), or an MA or MAC double-acting cylinder if the return stroke must also be powered rather than spring-driven. Remember the spring return is a fail-safe home position, not a mid-stroke lock - if the load must hold part-way, you need a separate mechanical solution.
Quick checklist
The MTA covers five bores: 16, 20, 25, 32 and 40 mm, with rods of 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm. Net pull force at 0.5 MPa (after the return spring) is about 46 N at 16 mm, 85 N at 20 mm, 133 N at 25 mm, 225 N at 32 mm and 339 N at 40 mm. Operating pressure is 0.2-1.0 MPa (28-145 psi), with a proof pressure of 1.5 MPa.
All three are AirTAC mini cylinders but they act differently. The MTA is single-acting pull: air retracts the rod and the spring extends it. The MSA is single-acting push: air extends the rod and the spring retracts it. The MA and MAC are double-acting, with air power on both strokes. Choose the MTA when the spring-out (extended) position is the safe or rest state of your mechanism.
No. The MTA is AirTAC's own round-body design with a rolling-packed stainless barrel; it carries neither ISO 6432 nor JIS designation, and we do not offer brand cross-references. Order by the AirTAC code - MTA{bore}X{stroke}, e.g. MTA20X100S - and confirm exact dimensions from the datasheet before designing it into a machine.
Every MTA model has a magnet built in as standard, so you only add a CMSG, DMSG or EMSG reed or solid-state switch to the order. Port threads are M5x0.8 on the 16 mm bore and 1/8" on the 20-40 mm bores, selectable as PT, G or NPT to match your fittings.
