AirTAC Pneumatics
The AirTAC 4A is a 5-port directional control valve switched by pilot air, not electricity - four body sizes from M5 to 1/2 inch, Cv 0.6 to 2.82, for pneumatic logic and explosion-risk areas.
inventory_235 models availableThe 4A is a five-port directional control valve whose spool is thrown by an external air signal on port 12 or 14. There is no coil, no voltage and no wiring - a pilot air signal does the switching. Four body sizes span the range: 4A100 (M5 or 1/8 inch, Cv 0.6 for 5/2), 4A200 (1/8 or 1/4 inch, Cv 1.0), 4A300 (1/4 or 3/8 inch, Cv 1.65) and 4A400 (1/2 inch, Cv 2.82), roughly suiting cylinder bores from 16 to 125 mm.
Every size shares the same sliding-column spool construction with exterior air control. It runs on air filtered to 40 um, at 0.15-0.8 MPa (21-114 psi) operating pressure with 1.2 MPa (175 psi) proof pressure, from -20 to +70 C, in an aluminium-alloy body. Lubrication is not required, but once the valve has run on lubricated air it must stay lubricated. Maximum no-load cycling: 5 cycles/sec for the 4A100 and 4A200 5/2 versions, 4 for the 4A300 5/2, 3 for the 4A400 5/2; all 5/3 versions are capped at 3.
The variant line-up is coded in the model number. The 10 series is a single-pilot 5/2 with spring return - the pilot signal must be held to keep position. The 20 series is a double-pilot 5/2 with memory: a short pulse switches it and it stays put even if pilot air is lost. The 30C, 30E and 30P are double-pilot 5/3 valves with closed centre (all ports blocked), exhaust centre (A and B exhausted, cylinder floats free) and pressure centre (A and B both pressured). Valves also mount on the 100M, 200M, 300M and 400M manifold bases, up to 16 stations on the smaller sizes. Note the ordering code: the catalogue's 4A210-08 is sold as 4A21008, without the hyphen.

Paint shops avoid electrical contacts near solvent vapour. A 4A200 or 4A300 double-pilot valve switches spray and fixture cylinders from a remote pilot air signal, with no coil, no voltage and no spark source in the hazardous zone.
On rinse-down equipment, wiring and connectors are the weak point. An air-piloted 4A100 or 4A200 with no electrical enclosure keeps the control logic out of the wash area, and the aluminium body tolerates -20 to +70 C.
Around resistance welders and large drives, electromagnetic noise corrupts solenoid switching. The 4A's spool is thrown purely by air, so the valve ignores EMI, and up to 16 stations on a 200M manifold base keeps the bank compact.
Where a machine is controlled entirely by air - air-actuated buttons, sequencers, limit-valve interlocks - a 4A210 memory valve latches on a pulse and holds even if pilot pressure is interrupted, so no electrical controller is needed at all.
Choose in this order. First, body size against flow: match the Cv to the cylinder bore and required speed, because an undersized valve starves the cylinder. As sizing guidance only, 4A100 suits roughly Dia 16-32 mm cylinders, 4A200 Dia 32-50, 4A300 Dia 50-80 and 4A400 Dia 80-125. Second, function: a single-pilot 10 valve fails back to home when the signal drops, a double-pilot 20 holds its last position (a pulse is enough, and pilot air can then be lost), and a 5/3 stops a cylinder mid-stroke - closed centre blocks the ports, exhaust centre lets the cylinder float free, pressure centre pressurizes both ports. One honest warning: even a 5/3 closed-centre valve does not mechanically lock an air cylinder, which can still drift under load; for real holding, use a rod lock. Third, port size and thread type. Fourth, individual mounting or a manifold base.
Before ordering, confirm five points: body size, function and centre type (5/2 spring, 5/2 memory, or 5/3 C/E/P), port size (M5, 06, 08, 10 or 15), thread type (PT as standard, G for BSPP, T for NPT), and mounting - individual or on a 100M-400M base. If your panel already provides electricity, the 4V solenoid series is usually the simpler answer; the 4A earns its place when electricity itself is the problem. Pair the circuit with speed controllers to set cylinder speed, and pneumatic silencers on the exhaust ports.
Quick checklist
Four body sizes, sized by flow: 4A100 with M5 or 1/8 inch ports and Cv 0.6 (5/2) or 0.51 (5/3); 4A200 with 1/8 or 1/4 inch ports and Cv 1.0 / 0.8; 4A300 with 1/4 or 3/8 inch ports and Cv 1.65 / 1.25; 4A400 with 1/2 inch ports and Cv 2.82 / 2.35. As sizing guidance, they suit cylinder bores from roughly Dia 16 mm up to Dia 125 mm. All run at 0.15-0.8 MPa (21-114 psi) with 1.2 MPa proof pressure, -20 to +70 C.
The second and third digits define behaviour. The 10 is a single air pilot, 5/2, spring return: the pilot signal must be held for the valve to stay switched. The 20 is a double air pilot, 5/2, with memory: a short pulse throws the spool and it stays in position even if pilot air is then lost. The 30C, 30E and 30P are double-pilot 5/3 valves: closed centre blocks all ports, exhaust centre vents A and B so the cylinder floats free, and pressure centre pressurizes both. Pick 20 where you need latching, 10 where you want a fail-back-to-home, and a 5/3 for mid-stroke stops - noting a closed centre does not mechanically lock a cylinder under load; use a rod lock for that.
They occupy the same position in a circuit but switch differently: the 4A is piloted by air on ports 12 or 14 and has no coil, voltage or wiring at all, while the 4V is electrically switched. They are therefore not a like-for-like electrical swap. If wiring is available, the 4V is usually the simpler choice; choose the 4A where electricity is a problem - explosion-risk areas, wash-down, high-EMI plant or purely pneumatic logic. Note the ordering code format: the catalogue's 4A210-08 is sold as 4A21008.
For mounting, each body size pairs with a manifold base: 100M (up to 16 stations, 1/4 inch inlet), 200M (up to 16 stations, 1/4 inch inlet), 300M (up to 12 stations, 3/8 inch inlet) and 400M (up to 8 stations, 1/2 inch inlet), or the valve bolts on individually. Fit silencers on the exhaust ports and speed controllers on the cylinder lines. Supply the air filtered to 40 um; no lubrication is needed, though a valve once run on lubricated air must stay lubricated.
