AirTAC PBR Series Pen-Size Cylinders

AirTAC PBR is a double acting pen cylinder, 6-16 mm bore, whose front cover bolts straight to the machine - no flange or foot bracket needed - built for compact, high-frequency duty.

Series Overview

The PBR is AirTAC's double acting pen cylinder with a front-cover mount. Air drives the piston both ways, like the plain PB, but the front cover carries its own threaded mounting holes, so the cylinder bolts directly to the machine - top-down or bottom-up - with no FA flange, LB bracket or CJ foot to buy or find room for. On a cylinder this small, that saved bracket is often the whole point.

The range runs 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm bores with ports M5x0.8 and a 0.15-0.7 MPa pressure band (a mini-cylinder ceiling - not the 1.0 MPa of standard cylinders). Stroke reach depends on bore: 60 mm at bore 6, 150 mm at bore 8, 200 mm at bores 10 and 12, and 300 mm at bore 16. Speed is 50-800 mm/s, temperature -20 to +70 C, cushioning is an anti-collision pad, and the design is built to the JIS standard. The rod guide is accurate and the guide bearing needs no added lubricating oil.

Two details are worth knowing before you order. First, the piston rod and barrel are stainless steel, so the PBR copes with generally corrosive working environments - rare at this size. Second, the 8 mm bore exists in this front-cover-mount group but not in the standard PB group, so PBR is one of the few places to get 8 mm. If you need the same front-cover mount with a spring return, the neighbouring PSBR (air-extend) and PTBR (air-retract) are the single-acting equivalents.

Typical Applications

precision_manufacturing

Ejector and push-off pins in compact jigs

Bore 6 and 8 cylinders with 10-50 mm strokes eject or push small parts off fixtures. The front cover bolts straight into the jig plate, so no bracket steals the little space a pen cylinder is chosen for, and the small bore responds quickly on repetitive cycles.

packing

Small-package pushers on packing lines

A bore 16 PBR with strokes up to 300 mm pushes cartons or trays sideways off a conveyor. Double acting control both ways plus stainless steel rod and barrel copes with the generally corrosive washdown-adjacent air and occasional spills found near packing machinery.

science

Sample handling in lab and analytical equipment

Bores 8-12 with 25-100 mm strokes lift or advance sample holders inside tight instrument frames. The magnet option (code S) takes CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches for end-position sensing, and the guide bearing needs no added lubricating oil near sensitive samples.

settings

Gate and lifter actions in small automated modules

Compact modules use a PBR as a gate, divert or lifter where a full-size cylinder will not fit. The 8 mm bore - available here but not in the standard PB group - bridges the gap when 6 mm lacks force and 10 mm is too bulky.

How to Choose the Right Model

Pick the bore for the force you need, then check the stroke ceiling for that bore before anything else - it varies a lot: bore 6 stops at 60 mm, bore 8 at 150 mm, bores 10 and 12 at 200 mm, and only bore 16 reaches 300 mm. Use bore 8 when 6 mm is too weak and 10 mm too big. Choose the rear cover by tube route: R is the axial inlet, available on every bore; U is the radial (side) inlet, available only on bores 8, 10, 12 and 16 - the 6 mm bore takes R only. Add S to the code if you want a magnet for CMSG, DMSG or EMSG sensors; without S there is no magnet. Note the covers cannot be dismantled, so confirm the exact force, weight and dimensions from the datasheet before finalising.

Five points to match before ordering: bore, stroke, rear cover (R or U), mounting orientation (top-down or bottom-up), and magnet S if a sensor is planned. Step out of the series when the requirement changes: if a position must be held on loss of air by spring instead of air, choose PSBR (air-extend) or PTBR (air-retract), not PBR; if you would rather mount with a separate accessory, the standard-mount PB family covers that, and PBD (double rod) and PBJ (double rod, adjustable stroke) sit alongside it.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Required force at your working pressure
  • ✓ Stroke and available mounting space
  • ✓ Port / thread type (PT / NPT / G)
  • ✓ Sensor / magnet option (-S)?
  • ✓ Side load — consider a guided model

Frequently Asked Questions

Bores are 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm with M5x0.8 ports. Stroke ceilings differ sharply by bore: bore 6 offers 10-60 mm, bore 8 offers 10-150 mm, bores 10 and 12 offer 10-200 mm, and bore 16 offers 10-300 mm. Long strokes exist only on the larger bores - never specify a 300 mm stroke on a 6 mm bore.

All three share the front-cover direct mount. PBR is double acting - air drives the piston both ways. PSBR is single acting, air-extend with spring return; PTBR is single acting, air-retract. Choose PBR for powered motion both directions and the longest strokes (double acting reaches 300 mm at bore 16, while the single-acting PSBR/PTBR stop at 100 mm). Choose PSBR or PTBR only if the de-energised state must hold a position by spring.

The cylinder itself is the same double acting pen design, so a PBR matches a PB of equal bore, stroke, port and magnet option in function. The difference is mounting: PBR's front cover has its own threaded holes and bolts straight to the machine, while PB needs an FA flange, LB bracket or CJ foot. Pick PBR to remove that accessory, or PB if your machine already uses one. Rear-cover inlet is also a choice: R (axial) fits all bores, U (radial) only bores 8-16 - bore 6 is R only.

Operating pressure is 0.15-0.7 MPa for this double acting mini cylinder - the ceiling is 0.7 MPa, not the 1.0 MPa of standard cylinders. Air must be filtered to 40 um or finer, and temperature range is -20 to +70 C. Cushioning is an anti-collision pad, and the covers cannot be dismantled, so confirm force, weight and dimensions from the datasheet.
