AirTAC Pneumatics
The AirTAC PTBR is a single-acting pen cylinder, bore 6-16 mm, where air pulls the rod in and the spring pushes it out - and the front cover bolts straight to the machine with no mounting bracket.
inventory_272 models availablePTBR is AirTAC's single-acting, air-retract pen cylinder in the PB family, built to the JIS standard in five bores: 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm. It has one working port (M5x0.8) on the rear cover: pressurised air pulls the rod IN, and the internal spring pushes it back OUT. With no air applied, the rod sits extended - the opposite behaviour to the PSBR (air-extend, spring-retract). Choose PTBR when the de-energised state must have the rod OUT. One rule governs its use: because the spring makes the return stroke, the extend direction must not carry a load.
The front cover carries its own threaded mounting holes, so the cylinder bolts directly to the machine, top-down or bottom-up, with no FA flange, LB bracket or CJ foot to buy or fit - this is the reason to pick PTBR over the plain PTB, which needs a separate mounting accessory. The piston rod and barrel are stainless steel, so the cylinder copes with generally corrosive working environments, and the accurate rod guide runs on a bearing that needs no added lubricating oil. Cushioning is a fixed anti-collision pad, not adjustable air cushioning. Supply pressure is 0.3-0.7 MPa or 0.2-0.7 MPa depending on bore - confirm the window for your bore from the datasheet. Speed range is 50-800 mm/s, temperature -20 to +70 C, and the air must be filtered to 40 um or finer.
Strokes follow the bore: 5-60 mm for bores 6, 8 and 10; up to 75 mm on bore 12; and up to 100 mm on bore 16. The ordering code is PTBR{bore}X{stroke}[S]R, where S adds a magnet for CMSG, DMSG or EMSG position switches - the magnet is optional, not standard. The rear cover is R (axial inlet) only; the radial-inlet U option exists solely on the double-acting PBR. Front and rear covers cannot be dismantled, so the cylinder is treated as a sealed unit. Note also that the 8 mm bore is offered in this front-mount group but not in the standard-mount PB group, making PTBR one of the few places to get it.

Air pulls the rod in to release a lever or latch; if the air supply fails, the spring pushes the rod back out so the fixture returns to its unclamped state. The spring-extend stroke must stay unloaded - hang the work on the air-retract stroke only.
A short-stroke PTBR on a box-forming or carton-sealing station pulls a small guide or stopper out of the product path on air and lets the spring clear it between cycles. The 10 and 12 mm bores with 15-30 mm strokes cover most such movements, and the S magnet feeds a CMSG or DMSG switch for position confirmation.
The 6-10 mm bores respond fast at the 50-800 mm/s speed range and suit relatively high-frequency duty, making PTBR a fit for small lifting or retraction motions on print, marking and stamping heads where the rod must sit out between shots.
The 6 mm bore with a 5-15 mm stroke gives a light, small-footprint pull-in for sample holders and shutter mechanisms in benchtop analysis equipment, with direct front-cover mounting into tight housings and stainless steel rod and barrel for generally corrosive laboratory atmospheres.
Start with the fail-safe direction: PTBR retracts on air and extends on spring, so the rod is OUT whenever air is lost; if you need the opposite, that is the PSBR. Then pick the bore for force with margin to spare when the load varies, and the stroke to match: only bore 16 reaches 100 mm and bore 12 reaches 75 mm, while bores 6-10 stop at 60 mm. Take bore 8 when 6 mm is too weak but 10 mm is too big - this front-mount group is where 8 mm lives. Check your supply pressure against the 0.2-0.7 or 0.3-0.7 MPa single-acting window for the bore you chose. Your five-point match: bore, stroke, M5x0.8 port, front-cover direct mounting (top-down or bottom-up), and the optional S magnet if a CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switch is wanted. Spring force and output force figures are published in the datasheet only - because the spring opposes the piston, use the datasheet values rather than a bore-and-pressure calculation.
Step outside PTBR when the motion changes. If the rod must be driven by air in both directions, the PBR is the double-acting front-cover-mount counterpart, and unlike PTBR it also offers the radial-inlet U rear cover. If you would rather mount on a separate accessory, the standard-mount PB, PSB and PTB take FA flanges, LB brackets and CJ feet, and PBD (double rod) and PBJ (double rod, adjustable stroke) cover special kinematics. In high humidity, heavy dust, water droplets, oil mist or weld spatter, take protective measures; for high temperature or corrosive duty, move to the corresponding heat-resistant or corrosion-resistant cylinder series.
Quick checklist
Five bores: 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm. Bores 6, 8 and 10 take strokes of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 mm; bore 12 adds 75 mm; bore 16 adds 75 and 100 mm. So the maximum stroke depends on the bore - 60 mm for the small bores, 75 mm on bore 12 and 100 mm only on bore 16. The 8 mm bore is offered in this front-cover-mount group but not in the standard-mount PB group, so it is one of the few places to get that size.
All three share the same front-cover-mount pen cylinder format. PTBR is single acting with air retracting the rod and the spring extending it - the rod is OUT when air is lost. PSBR is the reverse: air extends, spring retracts. PBR is double acting, air-driven both ways, and is the only one of the three offering the radial-inlet U rear cover (PTBR is R, axial inlet, only). Pick PTBR when the de-energised state must have the rod out, and remember its spring-extend stroke must not be loaded.
Both are single-acting air-retract pen cylinders, but PTB is mounted through a separate accessory - an FA flange, LB bracket or CJ foot - while PTBR's front cover has its own threaded mounting holes and bolts straight to the machine, top-down or bottom-up, with no accessory. That removes a part and the space it needed, but the mounting geometry differs, so check your interface before swapping. For double-rod versions in the same family, see PBD and PBJ.
As a single-acting series, PTBR runs at 0.3-0.7 MPa or 0.2-0.7 MPa depending on bore - send us your bore and we confirm the correct window from the datasheet. Air must be filtered to 40 um or finer, and the working temperature is -20 to +70 C.
