About the Airtac ATP Single Acting Port Compact Cylinder ATP40X5S
A single acting pull cylinder with spring return, the ATP40X5S keeps its rod extended by spring force and retracts it with air pressure, so it fails to the extended home position when air is lost. This 40 mm bore version delivers a net pull of 500.3 N at 0.5 MPa (729 N at 0.7 MPa, already net of the spring), and needs at least 0.2 MPa to overcome the spring. The 5 mm stroke suits micro-clamping and release motions where a long body would never fit, and the short ISO 21287 class body saves about 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder.
This model carries the optional -S magnet, so CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be mounted for end-of-stroke detection. The fixed TPU bumper at both ends absorbs impact at the stroke ends but never locks or holds a load mid-stroke. Note that the ATP family is discontinued: order the ATE40X5, the current-production drop-in successor with the same bore, stroke and force class, and confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping. In practice, plan on roughly 300 N of real work at 0.5 MPa, which lifts about 25 kg vertically with a 2:1 margin.

Position-verified gate pin
With the -S magnet and a CMSE switch, a PLC confirms the pin has retracted before a small assembly gate advances, using the 5 mm stroke as a go/no-go signal.
