About the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG20X50S
The MTG20X50S is a single acting, spring-return JIS mini cylinder with a 20 mm bore and 50 mm stroke, built for one-way pull work: the internal spring holds the rod extended at rest, and compressed air retracts (pulls) the rod on the work stroke. Because air acts on only one side of the piston, a single 1/8" port and one air line are all it needs. Net pull output, already after the spring, is 84.8 N at 0.5 MPa and 137.5 N at 0.7 MPa, with a minimum working pressure of 0.2 MPa and a speed range of 50 to 800 mm/s. If air is lost, the spring simply pushes the rod back out to its extended rest position.
Construction follows the JIS round-body mini format: a riveted SUS304 stainless barrel with a hard-chrome plated carbon steel rod (8 mm diameter, male thread M8x1.25), a two-way lubricant-storing piston seal, and a fixed anti-impact bumper pad that softens the stroke ends without locking or braking the load. The fitted magnet (the S in the code) allows CMSG, DMSG or EMSG switches to be mounted for end-of-stroke signalling. For sizing, treat the realistic working pull as roughly 60 percent of the rated figure, about 50 N, which is around 5 kg of safe continuous load at 0.5 MPa.

Retracting a locating pin
Air pulls an 8 mm pin out of a fixture nest on each cycle; on air loss or shutdown the spring pushes the pin back out to its extended rest position, giving a predictable fail-safe state without a second valve port.

Is the Airtac MTG Stainless Steel Mini Cylinder MTG20X50S the Right Cylinder?
Choose the MTG20X50S when your motion is a one-way pull of about 50 to 85 N and a 50 mm retract is enough: it is the smallest MTG bore, so step up to MTG25 for heavier draws (132.6 N at 0.5 MPa) or MTG32/MTG40 beyond that. Remember the direction of operation: the spring extends the rod and air retracts it, and the spring sets a 0.2 MPa minimum working pressure, so verify your supply stays above that. The spring return also caps standard strokes at 150 mm for this bore; for longer travel or powered movement in both directions, move to the double acting MG series. Mounting options are LB foot, FA flange, CB clevis and SDB pivot, with I and Y rod knuckles available, and the fitted magnet accepts CMSG, DMSG or EMSG position switches.
