This model is discontinued
AirTAC has phased out the MAL series. The drop-in replacement is ACE20X40SB — same bore, stroke, output force, port and mounting, so it fits the same application. Simply order the ACE20X40SB in place of this model. The ACE replacement is a current-production ISO 21287 compact cylinder in the same bore, stroke and force class, with a matching short body and the same mounting-accessory family, so it fits the same envelope. Confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before ordering.

The AirTAC Airtac ACP Compact Cylinder ACP20X40SB is a double acting DIN-standard tight/compact air cylinder with a Ø20mm bore and 40mm stroke, M5×0.8 air ports and a hard-anodized aluminium body. This model is discontinued — the current-production replacement is the ACE20X40SB (ISO 21287 ACE), in the same bore, stroke and force class.
Double acting on both strokes, the ACP20X40SB is a DIN-standard compact cylinder with a 20 mm bore and 40 mm stroke. Air extends and retracts the 10 mm hard-chrome rod, and a fixed TPU bumper sits at each end. At 0.5 MPa it pushes 157.1 N and pulls 117.8 N, rising to 219.9 N push at 0.7 MPa. The short ISO 21287-class body saves roughly 50% of the mounting length of an ISO 15552 profile cylinder, so it slots into tight jigs and guarding where a full-length body will not fit. The S code in this model means the optional -S magnet is fitted, so CMSE or DMSE reed and solid-state switches can be mounted directly on the body.
For sizing, treat about 94 N (roughly 9.6 kg) as the usable push force at 0.5 MPa instead of the full 157.1 N rating; vertically that is a lift of about 8 kg with a 2:1 margin. Note this model is discontinued: the current-production drop-in is the ACE20X40, which matches the same bore, stroke and force class. Confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions before swapping, since the ACP follows the older DIN layout. Fluid is air filtered to 40 um, pressure runs 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi), speed 30-500 mm/s, and the rod end carries a male thread.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC ACP datasheet (now discontinued). The ACE20X40SB (ISO 21287) carries the same bore/stroke/force class; confirm mounting-interface dimensions against the ACE datasheet before installation. Rod type: female thread (blank) or male thread (B). Thread options: PT (blank) / G.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 157 N | 118 N |
| 0.7 MPa | 220 N | 165 N |
| Max (@1.0 MPa) | 32 kgf | |
The ACE20X40SB produces the same force from the same bore. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical; size with a margin.
| ACP | DIN compact cylinder (double-acting, discontinued). |
|---|---|
| 20 | Bore size in mm. |
| ×40 | Stroke length in mm. |
| S | Optional built-in magnet for sensor position sensing (omit for no magnet). |
| B | Rod type: B = male thread; blank = female thread. |
Replacement mapping (swap P for E): ACP→ACE, ASP→ASE, ATP→ATE, ACPD→ACED, ACPJ→ACEJ. ACP-family: ACP (double acting), ASP / ATP (single acting push / pull), ACPD (double rod), ACPJ (adjustable stroke).
The 40 mm stroke and 157.1 N push at 0.5 MPa eject machined bushings or stamped clips from a nest, while the short body fits inside the fixture plate where a full-length cylinder cannot.
Because the -S magnet is fitted, CMSE or DMSE switches report rod position to the PLC on a robotics gripper station, cutting wiring time on the 20 mm bore body.
About 9.6 kg of usable push force at 0.5 MPa clamps aluminium profile sections during a drilling operation, with the male rod thread taking a knuckle for swivelling clamp arms.
If 157.1 N push at 0.5 MPa is more than the job needs, the 16 mm bore gives 100.5 N in the same short body; if the load is heavier, step up to the 25 mm bore at 245.4 N. Keep in mind that a plain cylinder of this type drifts when air is lost, so add a rod lock or pilot check valve if the load must stay put. The male rod thread (B) suits I/Y rod knuckles, and the optional -S magnet in this model pairs with CMSE / DMSE switches for end-of-stroke signalling. Order the ACE20X40 as the current replacement and verify ISO 21287 mounting dimensions first.
Replacement checklist
At 0.5 MPa it pushes 157.1 N and pulls 117.8 N; at 0.7 MPa it pushes 219.9 N and pulls 164.9 N. The theoretical maximum is 32 kgf at 1.0 MPa. Operating pressure is 0.15-1.0 MPa (22-145 psi) with a 1.5 MPa (215 psi) proof pressure, air filtered to 40 um, speed 30-500 mm/s, temperature -20 to +70 C, and an M5x0.8 port. It is double acting with a fixed TPU bumper at both ends.
Order the ACE20X40, the current-production ISO 21287 successor. Swap the P for an E and you get the same 20 mm bore, 40 mm stroke and force class in a short body. Because the ACP was built to the older DIN layout, confirm the ISO 21287 mounting dimensions against your fixture before swapping. The ACE family also carries the FA/FB flange, LB foot and CA/CB clevis options, and the -S magnet code keeps CMSE / DMSE switch compatibility.
