A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
One spring-return clamp on a jig or welding fixture, held open by air and closed by its spring whenever the valve de-energises.
A single pulsed air jet that clears dust or spills from bottle mouths between fills; normally closed means it stays silent when the line stops.
One valve position feeding the pilot port of a bigger actuated valve, with the block giving the pilot circuit a tidy, fixed connection.
One position, one decision set: normally closed or normally open (NC is the usual fail-safe pick, because the outlet stays vented when power is lost), a coil voltage identical to your control voltage - a coil cannot be rewired to another supply - and DIN plug or flying lead to suit your wiring. Follow the fail-safe logic of your machine. A normally closed valve delivers no air until energised, so a power cut vents the actuator - right for clamps that must release. A normally open valve keeps feeding air until energised - right for a blow jet or cooling stream that must run on failure. Both states exist across the 3V1 family, so order the position to match. A 3/2 valve never suits a double-acting cylinder; that is a job for the AirTAC 4V 5-port valves.
