The AirTAC Airtac 3V Solenoid Valves 3V308NOBT is a genuine 3-port 2-position (3/2) solenoid valve with 1/4 in ports. It either feeds its outlet or vents it to exhaust, which is what makes it the valve for single-acting cylinders, on/off air blow, clamping, vacuum switching and pilot duty.
The 3V308NOBT is the normally open, DC24V member of AirTAC's 3V3 family: a 3-port 2-position, direct-acting, single-solenoid valve with spring return and a coaxial poppet shut-off. Air flows from supply to outlet until the 24 VDC coil is energised, then the spring vents the outlet to exhaust on de-energisation - handy where a circuit should pass air by default and shut off only on command. The 1/4in port carries a Cv of 0.62, the highest flow coefficient in the 3V range.
The DC24V coil draws 6.5 W through a DIN plug connection, so it suits panels running a 24 VDC supply where a pre-wired lead is not wanted. This body is also rated for vacuum service down to -102.2 kPa, and a manual override is fitted for commissioning. Filtered air only (40 um or finer) - no lubrication needed. A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.
A normally open 3/2 valve with Cv 0.62 keeps a high-volume air jet sweeping chips off a fixture between cycles and only cuts the blow when the PLC energises the coil - no continuous holding power needed for the open position.
Larger single-acting clamps on a fixture table can be held extended by the normally open feed, with the valve energising momentarily to vent and release the clamp - the 1/4in port fills the bigger cylinder volume quickly.
Because the 3V3 body is rated to -102.2 kPa, it can sit in the vacuum line of a cup gripper lifting steel sheet, with the normally open function letting the vent action interrupt hold under control of the DC24V signal.
Downsizing is the only direction that exists from here: 3V3 is the biggest, highest-flow 3-port body AirTAC offers in this style. If Cv 0.62 is more than the duty needs, step down to 3V2 (1/8in or 1/4in, Cv 0.18-0.19, also vacuum-rated), to 3V2M (Cv 0.1) when a compact multi-station manifold matters more than flow, or to 3V1 for the smallest low-power jobs (3.0 W on DC24V). Match five points: 1/4in port with NPT thread here (PT is the standard thread, G and NPT are order options); initial state NO; coil voltage DC24V; electrical entry DIN plug rather than flying lead; and whether the circuit sees vacuum. Double-acting cylinders are out of scope for any 3-port valve - point those duties at the AirTAC 4V series.
