What a 3/2 Valve Does
A 3/2 valve has three ports — supply, outlet and exhaust — and two states. It either feeds the outlet or vents it to exhaust, and that is the whole job.
That makes it the right valve for a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, on/off air blow, a clamp, switching a vacuum generator or suction cup, and piloting a larger valve.
It cannot run a double-acting cylinder. A double-acting cylinder needs air alternately on two sides, which takes a 5-port valve — the AirTAC 4V series.

Field retrofit wiring

Is the Airtac 3V3 Solenoid Valve 3V308NCFI the Right Part?
Nothing in the 3V family out-flows the 3V3, so the sizing question is always downward. Step to 3V2 (Cv 0.18-0.19, still vacuum capable) for lighter 1/8 inch duties, to 3V2M (Cv 0.1) where packing many stations onto one manifold beats raw flow, or to 3V1 when the lowest coil draw wins - 3.0 W at DC24V. Confirm on the order: PT1/4 as the standard thread with G and NPT available as options, NC or NO, the coil voltage, DIN plug versus the flying lead this code specifies, and whether vacuum is part of the circuit. For a double-acting cylinder, switch to the 5-port AirTAC 4V range.
