The AirTAC Airtac CMS Reed Switch Cylinder Sensors CMSG-M08 is a genuine CMS magnetic position switch. It senses the magnet ring in a pneumatic cylinder's piston and signals when the piston reaches that point, giving a 2-wire output on 5-240 V AC/DC with a m8 connector. It only works on a cylinder that carries a piston magnet.
The CMSG-M08 is a reed position switch from AirTAC's CMS line, built around a mechanical magnetic contact rather than any electronic circuit. It detects the piston magnet of an AirTAC cylinder that carries the built-in magnet option and closes its 2-wire contact when the piston arrives. The M08 wiring means an M8 connector with a 0.5 m pigtail, the G profile sets the groove fit, supply spans 5-240 V AC/DC, and the enclosure is IP64.
The connector is the practical advantage here: at service time the sensor unplugs at the M8 point instead of you cutting a moulded cable, so a failed unit swaps out in seconds and cable runs stay detachable at a junction block. Note that a reed contact, unlike solid-state sensing, has a finite mechanical life - fine for normal machine duty, less ideal for millions of cycles per shift. Confirm that the G profile matches your cylinder's groove before ordering.

A reed contact switches a wide window, 5-240 V AC or DC, which is why it suits AC circuits and relay logic. IP64. The CMS range has no RW / IP68 option - that belongs to DMS and EMS. Switching distance, response time, current rating, voltage drop, LED behaviour, contact life, weight and dimensions are not published in our data set — ask us and we will confirm from the factory datasheet.
| CMS | Reed switch cylinder sensor — reed (magnetic contact). |
|---|---|
| G | Profile letter: the mounting / groove type that fits a particular cylinder body. This family offers E, G, H, J. It is a fit code, not a performance grade. |
| M08 | M8 connector. 020 / 030 / 050 / 100 are 2 / 3 / 5 / 10 m flying leads; M08 and M12 are M8 / M12 connector versions. |
| (blank) | Standard version. On a CMS the suffix -H is the high-temperature version — do not confuse it with the H profile letter. |
We do not hold the full profile-to-cylinder-series table, so confirm the profile letter against your cylinder model before ordering — send us the cylinder part number and we will check the fit.
The split is electrical, not quality. Solid-state DMS and EMS are DC-only and suit modern PLC inputs; the reed-based CMS switches a much wider window, so it is the one for AC circuits, relay logic and older panels. The RW (IP68) option exists on DMS and EMS only.
| This switch | CMSG · 2-wire · 5-240 V AC/DC |
|---|---|
| Consider DMS | the solid-state range with NPN / PNP 3-wire outputs (DC only) |
| Consider EMS | the mini 2-wire solid-state switch (DC only) |
| Mounting parts | F-MQ (round body), F-ACT (tie-rod) |
On a filler's gripper cylinders, the M8 pigtail plugs into a junction drop so technicians replace a failed switch without touching the panel wiring.
Mount on the index cylinder of a rotary table to confirm each station has reached position before the next machining step fires.
Detect full closure of a machine-tool guard cylinder; the wide 5-240 V range drops straight into the existing interlock relay circuit.
Choose this model when you want reed simplicity - AC or DC, either polarity, 2-wire series wiring - combined with the maintenance freedom of an M8 quick disconnect. If your panel prefers a hard-wired cable, the 020-100 flying-lead versions of the same family cut to length instead. For washdown or moving cable tracks, no CMS variant reaches IP68; that duty needs an RW electronic DMS or EMS switch. Whatever you pick, the cylinder must have the magnet option and the G profile must seat in its sensor groove.
Quick checklist
Use the F-MQ bracket on round-body cylinders and F-ACT on tie-rod cylinders where there is no groove to seat the switch. Both are ordered separately from the switch. Switching distance and mounting dimensions come from the factory datasheet — ask us for the sheet that matches your cylinder.
Type: reed switch with a mechanical magnetic contact. Output: 2-wire, no polarity. Supply voltage: 5-240 V AC or DC. Protection: IP64. Wiring: M8 connector on a 0.5 m pigtail. Sensing distance, contact current rating and response figures are not in our data - confirm those from the datasheet.
The connector lets you unplug the switch at a junction point for inspection or replacement, and one pre-wired drop can serve successive switches over the machine's life. A flying lead is cheaper per unit but must be cut, stripped and re-terminated every time the sensor is changed.
