The AirTAC Airtac CMSE Magnetic Reed Sensor CMSE-020 is a genuine CMS magnetic position switch. It senses the magnet ring in a pneumatic cylinder's piston and signals when the piston reaches that point, giving a 2-wire output on 5-240 V AC/DC with a 2 m flying lead. It only works on a cylinder that carries a piston magnet.
The CMSE-020 is an AirTAC CMS-series magnetic reed switch that detects the piston of a magnet-equipped cylinder. The contact is a sealed mechanical reed: it closes the moment the magnet passes and opens again as the piston retreats. This general-type version connects through a 2 m flying lead, accepts 5-240 V AC or DC, and the housing is sealed to IP64.
A reed contact carries no polarity, so it drops into an AC or DC circuit exactly like a mechanical limit switch - handy where a solid-state sensor would need extra conditioning. Note that the E profile defines the groove fit on the cylinder body; check it against your cylinder series or ask us to confirm before you order.

A reed contact switches a wide window, 5-240 V AC or DC, which is why it suits AC circuits and relay logic. IP64. The CMS range has no RW / IP68 option - that belongs to DMS and EMS. Switching distance, response time, current rating, voltage drop, LED behaviour, contact life, weight and dimensions are not published in our data set — ask us and we will confirm from the factory datasheet.

| E | Profile letter: the mounting / groove type that fits a particular cylinder body. This family offers E, G, H, J. It is a fit code, not a performance grade. |
| 020 | 2 m flying lead. 020 / 030 / 050 / 100 are 2 / 3 / 5 / 10 m flying leads; M08 and M12 are M8 / M12 connector versions. |
| (blank) | Standard version. On a CMS the suffix -H is the high-temperature version — do not confuse it with the H profile letter. |
We do not hold the full profile-to-cylinder-series table, so confirm the profile letter against your cylinder model before ordering — send us the cylinder part number and we will check the fit.
The split is electrical, not quality. Solid-state DMS and EMS are DC-only and suit modern PLC inputs; the reed-based CMS switches a much wider window, so it is the one for AC circuits, relay logic and older panels. The RW (IP68) option exists on DMS and EMS only.
| This switch | CMSE · 2-wire · 5-240 V AC/DC |

| Consider DMS | the solid-state range with NPN / PNP 3-wire outputs (DC only) |
| Consider EMS | the mini 2-wire solid-state switch (DC only) |
| Mounting parts | F-MQ (round body), F-ACT (tie-rod) |
On a carton packaging line, the CMSE-020 clips onto the diverter cylinder and tells the PLC the blade has reached full throw before the next case is released.
A robot pick station uses this switch on the gripper cylinder; its 2 m lead lands on a local terminal strip mounted beside the arm.
Fitted to the roll-feed slide of a punch press, the reed contact signals home at every stroke so the feed length stays synchronised.
Choose the reed CMSE family when your circuit is AC, or when you want a polarity-free contact that behaves like a mechanical limit switch; pick a DMS or EMS electronic switch instead for DC-only PLC inputs that need fast, bounce-free signalling. This unit is the plain 2-wire, 2 m lead version. If the cable will run near moving parts or washdown spray, a DMS-RW or EMS-RW switch with IP68 protection is the sturdier pick. A magnet-equipped cylinder (the -S option) and the matching E groove profile are both required - confirm the pairing before ordering.
Quick checklist
Use the F-MQ bracket on round-body cylinders and F-ACT on tie-rod cylinders where there is no groove to seat the switch. Both are ordered separately from the switch. Switching distance and mounting dimensions come from the factory datasheet — ask us for the sheet that matches your cylinder.
Type: magnetic reed switch with a 2-wire output. Supply: 5-240 V AC or DC, with no polarity on the contact. Protection: IP64 for the general-type housing. Wiring: a 2 m flying lead. For contact ratings such as maximum switching current, confirm from the datasheet.
You can, but the two behave differently. The CMSE reed contact is mechanical: it accepts AC or DC without polarity yet has a finite contact life and may bounce once per actuation. A DMS or EMS electronic switch is solid-state and DC-only (10-28 V on 2-wire types), giving clean, fast cycling into a PLC input. Choose by circuit type and cycling rate.
