About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X100

The AirTAC BSAI100X100 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. A defining feature of this series is the ability to secure the piston rod at any position along its 100 mm travel, providing a robust static holding force of 5500 N. Operating at a practical pressure range of 0.15-0.7 MPa, it generates 3927 N of push thrust at 0.5 MPa and up to 5497 N at 0.7 MPa.

It is critical to distinguish between the cylinder thrust and the clamp holding force; the 5500 N holding capacity is a separate static rating designed to maintain a load without live air pressure, not to drive the load. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston to prevent impact damage, whereas the actual clamping mechanism is what holds the load. The clamp operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port and requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston to unlock safely, preventing abrupt rod movement upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X100 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Secures heavy vertical loads at any point in the 100 mm travel, preventing gravity-induced drops during a sudden compressed air loss.

shield

Emergency Stop Safety

Engages the 5500 N clamp immediately after the piston stops, locking the payload in place mid-cycle if power is interrupted.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Locks the workpiece rigidly at a specific intermediate stroke location for precise milling or inspection operations without drift.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X100 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this 100 mm bore model when an application demands substantial holding capacity (5500 N) that exceeds the 3600 N holding force of the 80 mm bore variant. If your process only requires holding at the stroke end rather than at any intermediate position, a SAIL stroke-end lock would suffice, whereas the BSAI is necessary for mid-stroke security. Conversely, if no lock is required at all, a standard SAI cylinder is adequate. The BSAI100X100 features a 25 mm carbon steel rod with an M20x1.5 thread, providing high rigidity and excellent resistance to side loads. For this single-rod configuration, available mountings include Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 with PT port threads. Note that sensors require a magnet option (-S) to function with AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic switches. Remember that the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped and cannot brake a moving rod; safety-critical applications require an independent external safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X100 FAQ

The BSAI100X100 provides a static holding force of 5500 N. This bidirectional clamp secures the rod at any position along the stroke, but it only engages after the piston has completely stopped; it cannot brake a moving load.

The clamp is released by supplying air to the third G1/8 enclasp port. To prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced and the cylinder must be stopped before unlocking.
