About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X150

The AirTAC BSAI100X150 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the piston rod at any position along its 150 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 5500 N. Operating within a 0.15-0.7 MPa range, the cylinder generates a practical maximum thrust of 5497 N. You must size the holding force against your static load, as the 5500 N clamp capacity is a distinct quantity separate from the 5497 N thrust used for moving the mass.

This enclasp mechanism is bidirectional and operates via a dedicated G1/8 unlock port, which is separate from the 1/2 cylinder ports. The clamp engages only after the rod has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load. Release requires balanced air pressure on both piston sides to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Machining & Inspection Hold

Freezes the piston mid-stroke to provide a rigid, vibration-resistant platform for intermediate processing steps.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X150 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when a 63 mm bore (1402 N thrust, 2200 N holding force) is insufficient to safely secure your static load. Select the BSAI clamp-lock over a SAIL model when you need to hold the load at any intermediate stroke position, rather than just at the stroke end. If position holding is entirely unnecessary, a plain SAI cylinder is the simpler choice. The 25 mm carbon steel rod and M20x1.5 thread provide robust side-load resistance, but any stroke exceeding 300 mm still requires an external guide.

As a direct replacement match, ensure your setup uses a single-rod configuration, 100 mm bore, 150 mm stroke, PT tapered ports, and an appropriate mounting set (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2). This standard configuration lacks a magnet, so position sensing via CMSE or DMSE switches is not supported without modification. Always verify that the cylinder has fully stopped before applying the clamp, and add an independent safety measure for human-safety-critical holds.

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X150 FAQ

The BSAI100X150 provides a static holding force of 5500 N. The clamp locks the rod at any position along the stroke, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving and cannot be used as a braking device.

The clamp is released by supplying air to the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port. To prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced before unlocking. Safety-critical applications require an additional independent safety measure.
