About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X225

The AirTAC BSAI100X225 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a built-in clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper engages the carbon steel piston rod to hold the load securely at any position along the 225 mm stroke. This specific bore provides a robust static holding force of 5500 N, while delivering up to 5497 N of practical thrust at 0.7 MPa. Buyers must distinguish this holding force from the cylinder's thrust: the 5500 N rating dictates static load retention, whereas thrust dictates the power to move the load.

The clamp operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. It is crucial to understand that the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; the clamp is the true holding device. Furthermore, the lock engages only after the rod has completely stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. Release requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston to prevent abrupt rod movement.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X225 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Maintains vertical payloads at any intermediate height using the 5500 N static clamp, preventing sudden drops during air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Secures a workpiece firmly mid-stroke for machining or inspection, ensuring the rod remains completely immobilized without relying on air cushions.

shield

Emergency Power Loss Hold

Spring-applied clamp engages instantly anywhere in the travel to freeze motion safely when the air supply is interrupted.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X225 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose the BSAI100X225 when an application demands secure mid-stroke holding that a stroke-end lock like SAIL cannot provide, and where the 5500 N static holding capacity matches the load. If the workload is lighter, stepping down to a bore 63 cylinder offers 2200 N holding force and 1402 N pull thrust at 0.5 MPa, which may suffice. Conversely, heavier suspended loads might require the 8600 N holding force of a bore 125 unit. For simple end-of-stroke positioning without intermediate holding, a plain SAI cylinder is sufficient.

Because the 225 mm stroke is under the 300 mm threshold, side-load risks are moderate, though the M20x1.5 rod thread provides excellent rigidity. This single-rod configuration supports mountings including Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Ensure the PT port threads match your fittings. Note that this unit lacks a magnet, so position sensing via CMSE or DMSE switches is not supported without modification. Always apply balanced pressure to unlock the clamp, and add independent safety measures for human-safety-critical loads.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X225 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It engages a spring-applied gripper on the rod to hold the load at any position, but it only locks after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp is released via a third G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking; otherwise, the rod can jump abruptly. It is not a moving-rod brake.
