About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X900S

The AirTAC BSAI100X900-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. A defining feature is its ability to lock the piston rod at any position along its 900 mm stroke, providing a robust static holding force of 5500 N. The carbon steel rod extends with a practical thrust of 3927 N at 0.5 MPa, reaching 5497 N at the 0.7 MPa maximum operating pressure. Remember that the 5500 N clamp holding force is a separate quantity from the cylinder thrust; you must size the holding force against your static load, not the push thrust.

This model includes a -S magnet for position sensing via AirTAC CMSE (reed) or DMSE (electronic) switches fitted into the sensor grooves. The clamping system relies on a third G1/8 enclasp port, distinct from the 1/2 cylinder ports, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. Note that the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is the sole device responsible for securing the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X900S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Secures heavy vertical workpieces at any intermediate height along the 900 mm travel, preventing drops during air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Locks a part rigidly in place with 5500 N of holding force for machining or inspection operations without maintaining live air pressure.

shield

Emergency Stop Safety

Holds the load securely wherever the rod stopped during an emergency stop or power loss event, requiring balanced pressure to release safely.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X900S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when a 63 mm bore (1402 N pull, 2200 N hold) lacks the holding capacity for a heavy vertical load. If you only need to hold at the stroke end, a plain SAIL lock cylinder suffices, but the BSAI wins when intermediate position holding is required. For applications without any locking needs, a standard SAI cylinder is simpler. The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, it must be unlocked with balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston, or the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an independent external measure.

As a replacement, match the single-rod configuration, 100 mm bore, 900 mm stroke, and PT tapered ports. The 25 mm rod and M20x1.5 thread provide substantial side-load capability, but at 900 mm, an external guide is highly recommended to prevent rod bending. It accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts. Operating speed is 30-500 mm/s.

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI100X900S FAQ

The BSAI100X900-S provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to lock the rod bidirectionally at any position along the stroke, but it only locks after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp uses a separate G1/8 enclasp port and requires balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston to unlock. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can move abruptly upon release. For human safety, an additional independent safety measure is required.
