The AirTAC BSAI125X500 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It secures the 32 mm carbon steel piston rod at any position along its 500 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 8600 N. The base cylinder generates a push thrust of 6136 N at 0.5 MPa, but remember that holding force and thrust are distinct quantities: you must size the clamp's 8600 N capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's propulsion thrust.

This enclasp unit operates bidirectionally and requires a third G1/8 pneumatic port to release the lock. It functions only after the rod has come to a complete halt; it cannot brake a moving load. The variable air cushions at the stroke ends decelerate the piston, but the clamp itself is the sole device responsible for holding the load. For position feedback, a magnet can be added to enable CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI125X500 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore model when a smaller 100 mm bore (offering 3927 N thrust at 0.5 MPa and 5500 N holding force) cannot safely retain your load. Conversely, if 8600 N exceeds your static requirements, stepping down saves space and air consumption. Select the BSAI clamp-lock over a SAIL model when you must secure the load somewhere in the middle of the stroke, rather than only at the stroke ends. If position holding is entirely unnecessary, a plain SAI cylinder suffices.

This single-rod configuration accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts. It features PT tapered ports (1/2 inch cylinder port, G1/8 enclasp port). Operating pressure is 0.15-0.7 MPa, and speed is limited to 30-500 mm/s. Because the 500 mm stroke is substantial, an external guide rail is recommended to prevent side-loading damage to the rod seals. Always ensure pressures are balanced before unlocking to prevent abrupt rod movement, and add independent safety measures for human-safety-critical holds.
