About the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X700

The AirTAC BSAI80X700 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It provides a static holding force of 3600 N, gripping the 25 mm carbon steel rod securely at any position along its 700 mm travel. The clamp is bidirectional, maintaining the load whether the rod was extending or retracting. Operating at 0.5 MPa, this bore generates 2513 N of thrust, but buyers must distinguish between thrust and holding force: thrust moves the load, while the 3600 N clamp force sustains the static load without live air pressure.

This model features a 3/8 PT cylinder port and a separate G1/8 enclasp port for the unlock function. The clamp engages only after the piston has come to a complete stop; it cannot brake a moving rod. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston to prevent abrupt rod movement. The variable air cushion at the stroke ends decelerates the piston, but it does not hold the load—that is exclusively the clamp's role.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

Push/pull as tabulated. Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X700 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Maintains a 2513 N payload at any height along the 700 mm stroke without relying on continuous air pressure, using the 3600 N clamp.

shield

Power Loss Safety

The spring-applied enclasp engages instantly upon air loss, freezing the load in its current position to prevent gravity-driven crashes.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Secures the workpiece at a precise intermediate point for processing, ensuring the rod does not shift under cutting forces.

Is the Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X700 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select this 80 mm bore when an application demands mid-stroke holding power that a stroke-end-only lock (like the SAIL series) cannot provide. If 2513 N thrust at 0.5 MPa is insufficient, step up to the 100 mm bore (3927 N thrust, 5500 N holding force); if the load is lighter, the 63 mm bore offers 1559 N thrust and a 2200 N hold. For simple extension and retraction without position holding, a plain SAI cylinder is adequate. The BSAI80X700 uses PT port threads and accepts Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts. Because the 700 mm stroke is long and unsupported, an external guide is recommended to handle side loads and prevent rod deflection. The 25 mm rod thread provides robust mounting for heavy tooling. Note that without the -S magnet option, CMSE or DMSE sensors cannot be used for position feedback.

Airtac BSAI Locking Clamp Cylinder BSAI80X700 FAQ

The BSAI80X700 provides a static holding force of 3600 N. Unlike stroke-end locks, this clamp-lock grips the 25 mm rod and holds the load at any position along the 700 mm stroke.

No, the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it is not a braking device. To release the lock safely, balanced air pressure must be applied to both sides of the piston, otherwise the rod may move abruptly upon release.
