About the AirTAC MSI40

The AirTAC MSI40 is a single-acting, spring-return stainless-steel mini cylinder (push type) with a 40 mm bore and a 16 mm piston rod. Compressed air extends the rod and a built-in spring retracts it when the air is released, so the rod rests retracted; only one port takes air. Catalog output with the spring force already deducted is 567.3 N push at 0.5 MPa and 818.7 N at 0.7 MPa. The spring stroke has no air behind it, so it must not carry a load.

All MSI40 versions share 1/4" air ports, an M12×1.25 rod thread and rubber bumpers at both ends. The cylinder runs on filtered air between 0.2 and 1.0 MPa (proof 1.5 MPa), from -20 to +70 °C, at 50 to 800 mm/s. This page lists 47 stock order codes with strokes from 5 to 150 mm; the catalog maximum stroke is 150 mm.

Where the MSI40 Is Used

General automation

About 567.3 N at 0.5 MPa covers most pushing, lifting and indexing tasks.

Clamping fixtures

Rigid mountings hold the cylinder for clamps and presses.

Doors, gates and levers

Pivoting covers and brackets drive mechanisms that swing.

Choosing the Right MSI40 Configuration

Start with the stroke. Pick the exact travel your machine needs; a longer stroke adds length, weight and air consumption without adding force. If your length is not listed, request a quote and we will confirm whether it can be built.

Then choose the back cover and mounting. The back cover sets how the rear of the cylinder is fixed or where its air enters (CM round-end cover, R axial-port cover, U radial-port cover). R and U covers set the rear air inlet (axial or radial); a clevis-end cover with an SDB bracket or a TC trunnion lets the cylinder swing, while an FA flange or LB foot holds it rigid.

Finally pick the version: S adds a magnet for position sensors.

AirTAC MSI40 FAQ

Air extends the rod with about 567.3 N at 0.5 MPa (catalog value, spring force deducted); the internal spring retracts it when the port is vented. The force does not depend on the stroke code.

No. The return stroke is driven only by the internal spring, and AirTAC specifies that single-acting cylinders must not be loaded on it. Use a double-acting model if both directions must do work.

1/4" ports, PT thread as standard.

Back covers: CM round-end cover, R axial-port cover, U radial-port cover. Pick a pivoting cover or bracket when the load moves in an arc, a rigid one for straight-line loads.

Usually yes. Request a quote with the stroke, mounting and version and we will confirm whether it can be built, plus price and lead time.

0.2 to 1.0 MPa operating pressure (proof 1.5 MPa) and -20 to +70 °C on filtered air.

No. You can order a single MSI40. Orders are processed and handed to the carrier within 3-5 business days.
