About the AirTAC MTA40

The AirTAC MTA40 is a single-acting, spring-return stainless-steel mini cylinder (pull type) with a 40 mm bore and a 16 mm piston rod. Compressed air retracts the rod and a built-in spring extends it when the air is released, so the rod rests extended; only one port takes air. Catalog output with the spring force already deducted is 339.1 N pull at 0.5 MPa and 550.1 N at 0.7 MPa. The spring stroke has no air behind it, so it must not carry a load.

All MTA40 versions share 1/8" air ports, an M12×1.25 rod thread and rubber bumpers at both ends. The cylinder runs on filtered air between 0.2 and 1.0 MPa (proof 1.5 MPa), from -20 to +70 °C, at 50 to 800 mm/s. This page lists 33 stock order codes with strokes from 5 to 100 mm; the catalog maximum stroke is 100 mm.

Where the MTA40 Is Used

General automation

About 339.1 N at 0.5 MPa covers most pushing, lifting and indexing tasks.

Clamping fixtures

Rigid mountings hold the cylinder for clamps and presses.

Doors, gates and levers

Pivoting covers and brackets drive mechanisms that swing.

Choosing the Right MTA40 Configuration

Start with the stroke. Pick the exact travel your machine needs; a longer stroke adds length, weight and air consumption without adding force. If your length is not listed, request a quote and we will confirm whether it can be built.

Then choose the back cover and mounting. The back cover sets how the rear of the cylinder is fixed or where its air enters (CA clevis-end cover, CM round-end cover, U flat-end cover). A clevis-end cover with an SDB pivot bracket lets the cylinder swing; flat or round covers with an FA flange or LB foot hold it rigid.

Finally pick the version: S adds a magnet for position sensors.

AirTAC MTA40 FAQ

Air retracts the rod with about 339.1 N at 0.5 MPa (catalog value, spring force deducted); the internal spring extends it when the port is vented. The force does not depend on the stroke code.

No. The return stroke is driven only by the internal spring, and AirTAC specifies that single-acting cylinders must not be loaded on it. Use a double-acting model if both directions must do work.

1/8" ports, PT thread as standard.

Back covers: CA clevis-end cover, CM round-end cover, U flat-end cover. Pick a pivoting cover or bracket when the load moves in an arc, a rigid one for straight-line loads.

Usually yes. Request a quote with the stroke, mounting and version and we will confirm whether it can be built, plus price and lead time.

0.2 to 1.0 MPa operating pressure (proof 1.5 MPa) and -20 to +70 °C on filtered air.

No. You can order a single MTA40. Orders are processed and handed to the carrier within 3-5 business days.
