About the Airtac PSL Throttle Speed Control Fitting PSL803B-S
The PSL803B-S is the SUS304 stainless build of AirTAC's PSL speed controller, taking a Dia 8 one-touch tube on a 3/8in PT port. The trailing -S swaps the brass throttling column for SUS304 and uses a stainless spring gasket, with the body in aluminium alloy or SUS304 depending on the part, so the wetted trim stays copper-free. The rating ladder is identical to the standard PSL line - nothing is re-rated for the stainless build.
The B suffix makes this a meter-in controller: flow from the tube back to the 3/8in port is throttled, while the thread-to-tube direction passes free, and the handle carries a B marking so you can confirm the controlled direction at a glance. AirTAC recommends meter-in where a single-acting cylinder or spring-return actuator needs its supply side slowed; on a double-acting cylinder under varying load, meter-in control tends to produce stick-slip, so choose the A version instead. Adjustment is by a knob under an aluminium locking cap - turn to set, lock to hold.

Stainless (-S): SUS304 throttling column and body parts in place of brass, for copper-free environments. Ratings are unchanged from the standard version. A speed controller is not a shut-off valve - a small leak past a fully closed needle is normal. Close it before applying air, and turn it open slowly. Meter-Out or Meter-In?
- check Meter-out (A) is the default. It throttles the air LEAVING the cylinder, so the piston runs against a back-pressure cushion and moves smoothly.
- check Use meter-out on double-acting cylinders - it is the one AirTAC lists as first priority.
- check Meter-in (B) throttles air ENTERING the cylinder. It suits single-acting cylinders and air motors.
- check Meter-in on a double-acting cylinder tends to give a jerky, stick-slip stroke under varying load.

Pick the B (meter-in) version when the actuator is single-acting or spring-return; for a double-acting cylinder driven by a solenoid valve, meter-out (A) keeps back-pressure on the exhaust and gives a smoother stroke. On this PSL prefix the neighbouring bores are Dia 6 (PSL603B-S) and Dia 10 (PSL1003B-S): stepping down to Dia 6 suits compact grippers and short lines, stepping up to Dia 10 lets the larger tube bore feed bigger cylinder volumes so the knob works across a wider usable range. Every PSL 3/8in port accepts Dia 6, 8, 10 or 12 tube.
Mount the controller directly in the cylinder port rather than at the valve, so only the short stub between the fitting and the cylinder is throttled and response stays crisp. Note that PSL has a fixed tube direction; if the fitting must rotate to suit the piping run, move to the swivelling PSS series instead. The knob sets quickly by hand, unlike the push-lock PTL caps which trade speed of adjustment for resistance to being knocked off setting.
