About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X800S

The AirTAC BSAID100X800-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod extending from both ends and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper locks the piston rod at ANY position along its 800 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 5500 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 3681 N (0.5 MPa). Remember that the holding force is a separate quantity from thrust; you must size the 5500 N clamp capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's propulsion power.

This enclasp mechanism operates via a third G1/8 unlock port (distinct from the 1/2 inch cylinder ports) and requires 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. The dual-rod architecture is specifically chosen so you can mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the other, providing built-in anti-rotation and dual-side guidance. The variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; the clamp is what actually holds the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X800S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Z-Axis Holding

Secures a 100 mm bore lifting axis at any intermediate height during power loss, relying on the 5500 N clamp rather than live air pressure to prevent drops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the dual-rod platform at a precise mid-stroke coordinate for machining or inspection, using the second rod end for a position flag.

shield

Dual-Side Emergency Stop

Holds the load safely anywhere in the 800 mm travel during an E-stop, with balanced-pressure unlocking required to resume motion safely.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X800S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore when an application demands 3681 N of equal push/pull force alongside robust mid-stroke holding. If your load is lighter, the 80 mm bore offers 2268 N thrust and a 3600 N hold; if you need more, the 125 mm provides 5734 N thrust and 8600 N holding force. Select this BSAID model over a stroke-end-only SAIL lock when you must secure the load anywhere in the 800 mm travel. If no intermediate holding is needed, a plain SAID cylinder suffices.

For safe operation, the clamp locks only after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston, or the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an independent external measure. This 800 mm stroke requires an external guide to prevent side-loading. Replacement requires a double-rod, 100 mm bore, 800 mm stroke, PT ports, and a -S magnet for CMSE (reed) or DMSE (electronic) sensors. BSAID mounting omits FB/CA/CB/CR, using Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X800S FAQ

It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to grip the rod at any position with a 5500 N static holding force. It is bidirectional and holds equally whether the rod was extending or retracting.

No. The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped moving; it is not a dynamic brake. It must be released with balanced pressures to prevent the rod from jumping, and human-safety loads need an independent backup.
