About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X160S

The AirTAC BSAID125X160-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. Because it is a double-rod unit, its thrust is identical in both directions at 5734 N (0.5 MPa), and the rod extending from both ends allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. The integrated enclasp mechanism provides a massive 8600 N static holding force, gripping the rod securely at any position along its 160 mm travel. It is crucial to distinguish this holding force from the cylinder's 5734 N thrust—the 8600 N clamp rating is what resists the static load when air pressure is removed, so you must size the clamp force against your load, not the thrust.

This model includes a -S magnet for precise position sensing with AirTAC CMSE (reed) and DMSE (solid-state) switches fitted into the dual-side sensor grooves. The clamp operates via a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, separate from the 1/2 cylinder air ports, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release the spring-driven grip. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; it is the mechanical clamp that holds the load. Furthermore, the clamp locks only after the rod has stopped moving—it cannot brake a traveling rod—and it must be unlocked with balanced pressures on both piston sides to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X160S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Secures heavy vertical lifting stages at any point in the 160 mm travel, providing 8600 N of holding force during power loss to prevent gravity-driven drops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Locks a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place for machining or inspection, using the double-rod design to maintain equal force and prevent deflection.

Dual-Side Tooling Mount

Mounts the primary work tool on one rod end and a counterweight or position flag on the opposite end, ensuring balanced guidance and anti-rotation.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X160S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Select the 125 mm bore when your application demands high force and extreme holding capacity, stepping up from the 100 mm bore which offers 3681 N thrust and 5500 N holding force. If your load only needs to be held at the stroke ends rather than at any intermediate position, a plain SAI or SAIL cylinder would suffice, but the BSAID125X160-S is chosen specifically for its bidirectional, lock-anywhere capability along the travel. For safety-critical operations, note that the clamp locks only after the cylinder stops and requires balanced pressure to unlock safely; human-safety-dependent applications still require an independent external safety measure. As a direct replacement, match the double-rod design, 125 mm bore, 160 mm stroke, PT tapered ports, and the -S magnet. The BSAID accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mountings (omitting FB, CA, CB, and CR due to the double-rod architecture). The M27 rod thread provides excellent rigidity, though for any stroke at or above 300 mm, an external guide is recommended to manage side loads.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X160S FAQ

It provides a static holding force of 8600 N and locks at any position along the 160 mm stroke. Because it is a double-rod BSAID model, the cylinder's thrust is equal in both directions (5734 N at 0.5 MPa), and the clamp grips the rod bidirectionally.

The spring-applied clamp locks the rod only after it has stopped moving; it cannot brake a moving load. To unlock it safely, you must apply 0.15-0.7 MPa to the G1/8 enclasp port while balancing pressures on both sides of the piston, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly upon release.
