About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X300S

The AirTAC BSAID125X300-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It secures the load at any position along the 300 mm stroke, delivering a robust static holding force of 8600 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 5734 N (0.5 MPa), and having a rod extending from both ends allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a counterweight or position flag on the opposite side for dual-side guidance.

It is vital to distinguish holding force from thrust: the 8600 N clamp rating is entirely separate from the 5734 N pneumatic thrust, meaning you must size the holding capacity against the static load, not the cylinder's push force. The clamp engages via a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port and locks only after the rod has completely stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, unlocking requires balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X300S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Prevents heavy vertical stages from dropping when air pressure is lost, locking securely at any intermediate height rather than crashing to the stroke end.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Freezes a double-ended tooling platform at a precise intermediate point for machining or inspection, utilizing the second rod for an external position flag.

shield

Emergency Safety Stop

Provides a bidirectional fail-safe lock during sudden power outages, holding the workpiece stationary mid-cycle until pressure is restored and balanced.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X300S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore if your application demands heavy mid-stroke holding that a stroke-end-only lock like the SAIL cannot provide, or if you need equal push/pull force from a double-rod layout. If you do not require mid-stroke security, a plain SAI or SAID cylinder suffices. Stepping down to the 100 mm bore drops the holding force to 5500 N and the bidirectional thrust to 3681 N, whereas staying at 125 mm provides maximum stability. The 300 mm stroke on this large bore warrants an external guide to prevent side-loading on the 32 mm carbon steel rod and M27x2 thread. Replacement requires a double-rod, 125 mm bore, 300 mm stroke, PT ported unit, and the -S magnet for CMSE (reed) and DMSE (electronic) sensors. Note the BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, offering Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. For safety-critical loads, add an independent mechanical measure, as the clamp is not a moving-rod brake.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X300S FAQ

The spring-applied clamp provides a static holding force of 8600 N. It locks the rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving; it cannot brake a moving load.

The clamp is released via a G1/8 enclasp port, but only when air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release. Human-safety-critical applications require an additional independent safety measure.
