About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X900S

The AirTAC BSAID40X900-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 900 N at any position along its 900 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod actuator, the thrust is equal in both directions at 528 N (0.5 MPa). A critical distinction exists between holding force and thrust: the 900 N clamp secures the static load independently of the 528 N pneumatic thrust, meaning you must size the clamp capacity against the load weight, not the cylinder's push force.

The clamp locks bidirectionally only after the piston has stopped, serving as a static hold rather than a dynamic brake. It releases via a dedicated G1/8 enclasp port once cylinder pressures are balanced to prevent abrupt rod jumping. The double-rod design allows mounting a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the other for dual-side anti-rotation. Variable air cushions at both ends decelerate the piston near stroke limits, but the clamp itself is what holds the load securely.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X900S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Power-Off Hold

Secures a 900 mm vertical lift at any intermediate position during an air loss event, relying on the 900 N clamp rather than live pressure.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-sided workpiece rigidly in place for intermediate processing, using the double-rod design to prevent rotation during clamping.

conveyor_belt

Extended Transfer Dwell

Pauses a long-stroke transfer carriage at a specific dwell point along the 900 mm travel, engaging the lock only after the load fully stops.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X900S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 40 mm bore model when an application requires 528 N of thrust both ways alongside a 900 N static hold over a 900 mm non-standard stroke. If less force is needed, the 32 mm bore offers 345 N thrust and a 600 N hold; for heavier loads, the 50 mm bore provides 825 N thrust and a 1400 N hold. This BSAID variant is selected over a stroke-end-only SAIL lock when intermediate positions must be held, and over a plain SAID when power-off safety is mandatory. Because the 900 mm stroke exceeds the 800 mm standard maximum, it is a non-standard stroke requiring external guide support to manage side loads on the 16 mm rod.

For safe operation, ensure the rod has completely stopped before engaging the clamp, and always balance the air pressure before unlocking to prevent sudden movements. Replacement requires a double-rod configuration, 40 mm bore, 900 mm stroke, PT tapered ports, and the BSAID mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2), omitting the FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets. The -S magnet integrates with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors for position feedback.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X900S FAQ

It provides a 900 N static holding force. The spring-applied, air-released clamp locks the rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving; it cannot brake a moving load.

The clamp releases via a separate G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an independent backup measure.
