About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X25S

The AirTAC BSAID50X25-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 25 mm travel with a static holding force of 1400 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, its thrust is identical in both directions, delivering 825 N of push and pull force at 0.5 MPa. A critical distinction is that this 1400 N holding force is entirely separate from the cylinder's thrust; you must size the clamp against the static load, not the pneumatic push capacity.

The double-rod design allows mounting a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end, providing dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. This unit includes a -S magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors. Unlocking requires a third G1/8 enclasp port and balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston; otherwise, the rod can jump abruptly upon release. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near the stroke end, while the clamp is the true holding mechanism.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X25S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Maintains a 1400 N vertical load securely at any 25 mm travel position, preventing gravity drops during a pneumatic pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Clamps the dual rods rigidly to hold a workpiece or tooling steady against machining forces once the piston has stopped.

shield

Power-Loss Safety

The spring-applied enclasp engages automatically on air loss to freeze the guided load mid-stroke, needing balanced pressure to unlock.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X25S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 50 mm bore model when you need equal bidirectional force and mid-stroke holding that a stroke-end-only SAIL lock cannot provide. If your application requires less holding capacity, the 40 mm bore offers 900 N of holding force and 528 N of thrust at 0.5 MPa. If your load demands more, step up to the 63 mm bore, which provides 2200 N of holding force and 1402 N of thrust. A plain SAID cylinder suffices if live air pressure continuously holds the load without needing a fail-safe lock.

This BSAID50X25-S features a 20 mm carbon steel rod with an M16x1.5 thread, PT tapered ports, and a 1/4 inch cylinder port. It operates at 0.15-0.7 MPa with speeds of 30-800 mm/s. The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load, and safety-critical applications require an independent safety measure. The correct mounting set for this double-rod type omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X25S FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 1400 N. It locks the rod at any position along the stroke bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod.

The clamp is released via a third G1/8 enclasp port, but only when air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressure is unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon unlock, so an independent safety measure is required for human-safety loads.
