The AirTAC BSAID50X400-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 1400 N, gripping the rod securely at any position along its 400 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod actuator, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa). Buyers must distinguish this holding force from the thrust: the 1400 N rating dictates the static load the clamp can sustain, whereas the 825 N thrust drives the motion.

This design uses a rod extending from both ends, allowing you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. The enclasp mechanism relies on a third G1/8 unlock port, separate from the 1/4 cylinder ports. Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X400S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when a project requires symmetrical force (825 N both ways) and dual-end tooling. If your application only needs a lock at the stroke end, a SAIL cylinder suffices, but the BSAID50X400-S is necessary for holding at any intermediate position. If higher holding capacity is needed, stepping up to a 63 mm bore provides 2200 N of holding force and 1402 N of pull thrust. Conversely, a 40 mm bore drops the holding force to 900 N.

The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure (0.15-0.7 MPa) on both sides of the piston, or the rod may jump abruptly. For safety-critical applications, install an independent external safety measure. This unit includes a magnet for CMSE (reed) and DMSE (electronic) sensors. It uses PT ports and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts. Given the 400 mm stroke, use an external guide to prevent excessive side loading on the 20 mm rod.
