About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X150S

The AirTAC BSAID80X150-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod out both ends and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 150mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 3600 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 2268 N (at 0.5 MPa). Buyers must distinguish this holding force from thrust: the 3600 N clamp rating is the static load capacity, entirely separate from the pneumatic push and pull forces that move the rod.

The dual-rod architecture lets you mount a workpiece on one end and a counterweight, position flag, or secondary guide on the opposite end for anti-rotation and dual-side guidance. It uses a 25mm rod with an M20x1.5 thread, providing robust side-load resistance. This model includes a -S magnet for precise positioning feedback via CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is what actually holds the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X150S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Mid-Travel Vertical Hold

Locks a suspended load at any point along the vertical stroke with 3600 N of holding force, preventing gravity-driven drops during an air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Freeze

Secures the dual-sided workpiece rigidly at a custom inspection or machining point, using the mechanical clamp rather than relying on live air pressure.

shield

Symmetric Emergency Stop

Uses the double-rod design to mount a safety flag on one end while the clamp halts the tooling end instantly upon power loss, maintaining equal force both ways.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X150S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod clamp-lock cylinder when an application requires holding a load mid-stroke and symmetric force. If 2268 N thrust is excessive, stepping down to the 63mm bore yields 1402 N pull and a 2200 N holding force. Conversely, heavier loads might require the 100mm bore (3681 N pull, 5500 N hold). Select BSAID over a stroke-end-only SAIL lock when you must freeze the rod anywhere in its travel, or choose a plain SAID if no clamping is needed. This BSAID80X150-S uses PT tapered ports (3/8 cylinder, G1/8 enclasp) and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts (omitting FB, CA, CB, CR). The clamp locks only after the cylinder stops; it cannot brake a moving rod. Always balance air pressure on both sides to unlock, or the rod may jump abruptly. For human-safety critical holds, add an independent safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X150S FAQ

The built-in clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It is bidirectional and locks the rod at any position, but only after the cylinder has come to a complete stop.

You must apply 0.15-0.7 MPa to the separate G1/8 enclasp port only after balancing the air pressures on both sides of the piston. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly when released.
