Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X700S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X700S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 700mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X700S

The AirTAC SAILB160X700-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, it safely holds the rod at the retracted stroke end without requiring continuous live air pressure. In the 160mm bore class, this actuator generates a substantial 14074N of push force at 0.7MPa, making it suitable for heavy-duty positioning tasks.

A key mechanical detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end measures 50mm, which is intentionally shorter than the free end to accommodate the locking mechanism. This model includes a standard magnet for position sensing and uses PT threaded ports. The lock is a static holding device that engages only after the piston fully stops at the stroke terminal; it is not designed to brake a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X700S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures heavy lifted platforms in the retracted position during power loss, utilizing the spring-applied lock to prevent sudden descent.

precision_manufacturing

Heavy Clamp Securement

Maintains high-force clamping pressure on large workpieces at the stroke end without consuming continuous compressed air.

shield

Safety Gate Locking

Keeps heavy safety gates or machine guards locked closed in the rod-in position until the air-release signal is actively supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X700S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore cylinder when an application requires 14074N of push force at 0.7MPa and failsafe retracted-end holding. If your force requirements are lower, stepping down to a 125mm bore yields 8590N at the same pressure. For higher force needs, the 200mm bore provides 21991N. Select SAILB specifically when the load must be secured in the rod-in position; choose SAILF if the load must be held at the extended end. If your application requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than at the stroke terminal, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

Valve selection is critical for safe operation: never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. Always utilize an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. At a 700mm stroke, the extended rod length increases susceptibility to side-loading, so rigid guidance or a linear guide should be incorporated to prevent premature seal wear. For safety-critical loads that could cause injury if dropped, add an independent mechanical safety measure alongside the lock. Replacement parts must match the 160mm bore, 700mm stroke, back locker position, PT port thread, and -S magnet specification.

Quick checklist

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X700S FAQ

At 0.7 MPa operating pressure, the 160mm bore provides 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force. The maximum theoretical force is 2050 kgf at 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end without live pressure. It unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but it cannot clamp at an arbitrary mid-stroke position.
