Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X800S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X800S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 800mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X800S

The AirTAC SAILB160X800-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, it automatically secures the piston at the retracted stroke end the moment release pressure is cut, holding heavy loads safely without relying on live air. In the 160mm bore class, this actuator delivers 9425N of pull force at 0.5MPa and up to 18095N of push force at 0.9MPa, making it well-suited for demanding vertical hold tasks.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position feedback via CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors. To accommodate the locking pin mechanism, the variable air cushion at the locker end is 50mm, which is shorter than the non-locking free end. The rod is crafted from standard carbon steel, and the unit features PT tapered port threads.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X800S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds heavy lifted loads securely at the retracted stroke end during air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting assemblies.

shield

Power Failure Hold

Spring-applied lock engages automatically upon power loss to maintain a safe static position for heavy guarding doors and safety gates.

factory

Heavy Press Hold

Maintains clamping force at the retracted terminal position for large industrial presses without continuously consuming compressed air.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X800S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore when a task requires securing substantial loads up to 9425N at 0.5MPa during a power loss, as smaller bores like the 125mm only provide 5734N of pull. Choose the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be held in the retracted position; if your process requires holding the load extended, the SAILF variant is the correct choice. If your application needs to freeze the rod at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke end, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

The SAIL lock is a static holding device that engages only after the cylinder stops, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. To prevent back-pressure on the locker side from accidentally releasing the lock, avoid fast-exhaust valves and use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Because human safety might depend on the load staying up, always add an independent safety measure. With an 800mm stroke, use a guide rail to prevent side-load damage. Replacement matches require 160mm bore, 800mm stroke, back locker, PT port, and a magnetic piston.

Quick checklist

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X800S FAQ

This 160mm bore cylinder generates 10053N push and 9425N pull at 0.5MPa. At 0.9MPa, the push force reaches 18095N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end. You can unlock it automatically by supplying release air or by using the manual release lever. It is not a dynamic brake and cannot stop a moving rod.
