Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X800S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X800S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø40mm bore, 800mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X800S

The AirTAC SAILB40X800-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A spring-applied, air-released mechanism engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, holding the load securely without requiring continuous live air pressure. Delivering 879N of push force at 0.7MPa, it uses a carbon steel rod and includes a magnetic piston for position sensing.

The locker end features a shorter 20mm variable air cushion compared to the 27mm cushion on the free end, optimizing end-of-stroke deceleration. For reliable detection, the integrated magnet works seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed switches and DMSE solid-state electronic sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X800S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a lifted vertical load securely at the retracted stroke end the moment air pressure is cut, preventing sudden crashes during power loss.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Pause Lock

Locks a conveyor indexing mechanism in the retracted position during emergency stops or maintenance, ensuring the system remains rigidly fixed.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Maintains a clamped workpiece at the rod-in stroke end without consuming continuous air, saving energy while keeping the part firmly secured.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X800S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 40mm bore when your application requires 879N push force at 0.7MPa; stepping up to a 50mm bore increases that output to 1374N, while dropping to a smaller bore is not available as 40mm is the smallest SAIL size. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position, and choose SAILF if it needs holding at the extended rod-out end.

If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end hold, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. Remember that this SAIL lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for moving rods. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Because this model features an 800mm stroke, adding an external guide rail is highly recommended to prevent excessive side-load wear on the rod. For safety-critical suspended loads, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement matches require 40mm bore, 800mm stroke, back locker position, PT tapered ports, and the -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB40X800S FAQ

At 0.7MPa operating pressure, this 40mm bore cylinder provides 879N of push force and 741N of pull force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only after the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold, not a dynamic brake, and is released automatically via air supply or manually via a lever.
